Omaha library finally receives children’s picture book that was due in 1985: ‘Better late than never!’

The Omaha Public Library announced last month that it was finally accepting books that had been checked out in 1985.

The Nebraska Library posted a photo of the book, a children’s picture book called “Millions of Cats” by Wanda Gag, on X in January.

The book was originally published in 1928 and entered the public domain in 2024.

The book was checked in 1985 and will expire on June 27 of that year.

An employee snapped a photo of the book when he came across it, prompting the library to share the rare find.

“Better late than never!” Omaha Public Library wrote on January 26. “The Sorensen Branch AV found a long overdue book in their book drop.”

“The date stamp places this item with the original collection since the branch first opened!”

Fortunately for borrowers, the library system had a liberal policy against late returns – even in 1985.

Omaha Public Library Assistant Director Rachel Steiner told Fox News Digital that even after four decades, the patrons won’t be charged much.

“Prior to penalty-free, we charged $.25 a day for overdue items but limited overdue fines to $5.00,” explained Steiner. “So that’s the highest amount we’ll charge if we’re still collecting outstanding fines.”

“If the item is not returned, then we charge a replacement fee for the item.”

Borrowers are not charged at all for the book, which predates the library’s digital system.

“We didn’t charge the person for this item, because it wasn’t in our patron database since it was checked before we moved everything to the computer,” explained Steiner.
