Walters was born on September 25, 1929, to Dena and Louis “Lou” Walters. He was exposed to celebrity at a young age because his father worked in the entertainment industry, which Walters says taught him valuable lessons.

Media mogul Winfrey paid tribute to Walters on social media after hearing the news of her death, calling her a strong and generous role model.

“Without Barbara Walters, there would be no me — or any other woman you see on the evening, morning and daily news,” Winfrey captioned a photo of herself and Walters on her Instagram. “He is indeed a Trailblazer. I did my first television audition with that in mind all the time.”

She went on to express her gratitude for being a strong and good role model, writing, “Grateful to know her. Grateful to follow her Light.”

Winfrey has never hidden the fact that Walters was a huge inspiration to her when she first started her career as a television personality, stating that at the age of 17, she aspired to be a TV reporter like Walters.

She surprised Walters with a guest appearance and invited hundreds of female reporters, including Katie Couric, Hoda Kotb, and Gayle King, to her farewell tour on “The View” in 2014.
