Outraged family shocked to find wrong person lying in casket, wearing loved one’s clothes

A Mississippi family grieving the loss of a relative is saddened when they show up for the funeral – and notice another woman lying in a casket wearing their loved one’s clothes and jewelry.

Georgia Robinson said she could tell immediately that something was wrong on Nov. 3 when she and her family arrived at the funeral home in Jackson, where they expected to say goodbye to her sister, Mary Jean Robinson.

“Once we got in there and signed the book and everything, we walked down to see his body, and I knew something was wrong. I could tell it wasn’t him from a distance,” Robinson told WLBT.

He said he was surprised to see the stranger lying in the casket wearing the clothes and jewelry the family had brought for Mary Jean.

“No ma’am, this is not my sister. This is her casket, this is the clothes we brought her, this is the jewelry we brought her, and I said these are her flowers, but I don’t know who’s in the casket,” Robinson told the outlet.

“We told him about the mistake, and he was very rude and very uncaring. He has an attitude with my son. [He] told us that we have to pay for everything again,” said the grieving woman.

“I told him not to put anything on my sister that the woman had. He put the earrings on her,” Robinson told the outlet.

“I feel bad. Just thinking, if we had a closed coffin, we would definitely bury someone else instead of us,” he added.

James Stewart, one of the funeral home’s directors, told WLBT he could not confirm or deny that a mix-up occurred, but insisted that the family told him they were satisfied with the service.
