The Barbie film director, Greta Gerwig now holds the title of being the first solo female director to have a film cross the billion dollar mark. The film was released in July and quickly became a fan favorite for many reasons.

The cast is filled with heavy hitters like Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Issa Rae and more. Also the soundtrack has become a hit in its own right too. Nicki Minaj, Dua Lipa, Ice Spice, Dominic Fike, and the newly insulted Lizzo.

Gerwig worked years into a certified hit film and not only did it show, it paid off. The first solo female director to cross the $1 billion mark, that’s no easy feat. Even movies with bigger names bombed.

Greta Gerwin Has a Competition

For months fans competed over who would take the top spot, Barbie or its opening week competition, Oppenheimer. The historical film starring Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, and Rami Malek, and directed by Christopher Nolan focuses on the inventor of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer.

The film, which also starred Emily Blunt, did well in theaters but it couldn’t outdo Barbie and all her friends. Reviews for both blockbusters have been great, but it’s all the pink and all the happiness that brought Gerwig to the top spot.

Gerwig and her co-stars have been celebrating her birthday while still out and promoting the Barbie movie. Gosling who plays Ken… The main Ken goes out of his way to put together a flash mob for Gerwig’s birthday surprise.

The video was shared this week on Barbie Instagram movies. “As Kens know… Sometimes the only way to express your feelings is through song & dance!” read captions and videos.

In the video, all the Kens get together for a performance of “I’m Just Ken” but then a bunch of Barbies join Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night.” Gerwig cried a little at the sweet and appropriate sentiment.

“That’s very beautiful,” he said, then comically asked “Who are you?”

Greta Gerwig Had to Guess

At first, the writer did not know who thought of doing this. When prompted by the voice behind the camera, he still “doesn’t know”. They gave a little hint for Gerwig, “Think of a bagpiper.” Gerwig laughed immediately.

Gosling recently sent a bagpiper into a bedroom hosted by Gerwig’s “girls only”. It includes Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, and America Ferrera. No Kens allowed! Not only did the Scottish man play the bagpipes he recited the Braveheart speech.

This delighted Barbie and confirmed to Gerwig that she had chosen the perfect Ken. The director spoke with GQ earlier where he told this story and praised Gosling. He “can always sense very quickly what will be the funniest, funnest thing to do next. And then he does it.”
