Facts/Trivia
- Padmavati Rao has translated five plays of Girish Karnad and Mahesh Dattani’s 30 Days In September into Hindi.
- Although she has done several plays, she won a standing ovation for her solo performance based on Dhiruben Patel’s “Poem of the Kitchen,” and she considers this performance her major career achievement.
- When the COVID-19 pandemic caused the world to experience a crisis, Padmavati Rao took the initiative towards the farming community. He concentrated his attention in villages outside Bengaluru where he propagated natural farming methods and arts & crafts because of his long-standing desire to serve the farming community. He made his contribution to farmers by building his own non-electric refrigerator and saving costs by using affordable building materials. In an interview, he quoted,
I have long wanted to serve the farming community. For that, I created a cost-effective refrigerator that does not use electricity.”
- According to him, he has longed to cultivate since he was 23 years old; moreover, he has been concerned about the issue of farmer suicides in India for a long time. This prompted him to create a cost-effective refrigerator that would help farmers keep their vegetables fresh if they could not sell them. This idea of making a cost-effective refrigerator caught his attention when the walls of his compound deteriorated, and he wanted to use the bricks from the damaged walls constructively; took it to make a non-electric and cost-effective refrigerator. Despite the cement and sand, he used burlap, old flattened cardboard boxes to serve as sliding doors, old wire shelves and river grass mats (chaapey). To examine the results, he kept oranges, tomatoes and milk in the refrigerator. Oranges last up to 28 days, tomatoes for 15 days, and milk, after boiling once a day, lasts for a week. He also tested the refrigerator at the height of summer. When he watered the burlap material three times a day, the oranges and tomatoes showed no signs of dehydration or rot. Cooked food stored after dinner is good for lunch the next day, and vegetables last for about two to three days. His creation deserves appreciation.
- Apart from farming, Padmavati has many interests as she loves sewing, mending, recycling and writing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he also devoted his time to writing. He is working on three books simultaneously – the first is about his mother’s recipes, the second is a book of poetry titled “Of Love and Silence,” and the third is a play.
