Pat Martino’s early life
Before Pat crawled, Carmen Azzara (her father) began the child’s musical education. Her father was a tailor by profession, but Carmen had taken guitar lessons from Eddie Lang, who was a jazz pioneer. His father decided his son, Pat Azzara, should play the guitar even though he was still very young.
Pat Martino was just 2 years old when he snuck into his parents’ bedroom to play his father’s guitar. He was not allowed to touch the guitar. When he was young, his finger was cut off because of a rope. He was fascinated by the color of his blood. This is how he painted the floorboards and walls with his blood.
After this incident, his father continued to use the ‘reverse psychology’ method by insisting that he stay away from the guitar. When Pat Martino was 11, he got his guitar and started taking lessons. He’s too good and his game is growing fast. He developed most of his techniques when Pat was a teenager.
Pat Martino career details
When he was 15, he dropped out of high school. After that, he changed his name to Mickey Martino for his father’s stage name. He went on tour with Lloyd Price. Pat Martino played with Price on and off for the next 5 years.
He replaced George Benson in Jack McDuff’s band. And the following year when he was 22, Pat Martino released El Hombre on Prestige Records, which was his debut album.
He began having a series of seizures, which eventually required psychiatric intervention in the late 1960s. At the time, Martino was misdiagnosed with manic depression. He never stopped recording and performing. As a result, in 1968, he released East! on Prestige Records.
Pat Martino got his first major label record deal in the 1970s from Warner Bros. Records. After that, he continued to record for Muse Records. He produced Joyous Lake and Starbright (both out of print) for Warner Bros. and Muse, Pat Martino performed Live! in 1972, Awareness in 1974, and We’ll Be Together Again in 1976.
Throughout the decade, Pat Martino battled his seizures until 1980 when he had a severe seizure in the hospital. After a brain scan, doctors found the cause of his health problems to be a cluster of blood vessels in his brain that were on the verge of bursting. The doctor told him that Pat Martino only had one day left to live.
This is why he returned to his hometown of Philadelphia and underwent brain surgery immediately. Although the surgery was successful, he lost his memory completely and it took over 2 years to fully recover.
By 1982, he had returned to performing but delayed returning to the recording studio. Finally, Pat Martino released The Return on Muse Records in 1989. However, disaster struck the musician again when his mother died in 1989 of cancer. His father also died the following year.
These incidents left him devastated and he fell into a deep depression where he cut off his social contacts and drastically reduced his recording schedule. Once again, his health failed him. But then, he got on the track. In 1995, he embarked on his first major tour in 1976. He released Open Road. He also received a tribute from his hometown at the Mellon PSFS Jazz Festival.
His married life
He married Ayaska Asahi Martino in 1997 and Pat Martino died on November 1, 2021.
