Pat Sajak’s decades-long run with “Wheel of Fortune” has an expiration date.
The television personality has confirmed her retirement from the competitive game show via her social media account, stating that the upcoming season will be her last. The 76-year-old has earned numerous accolades since he took over hosting duties from Chuck Woolery in 1981. He is also the longest-running game show host, surpassing “The Price Is Right” host Bob Barker in 2018.
Pat Sajak is ready to step down from hosting ‘Wheel Of Fortune’
Sajak will take a back seat as a consultant after more than 40 years hosting “Wheel of Fortune.” Take to Twitter to share news with his nearly 380k followers, Chicagoans write:
“Well, the time has come. I have decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It’s been an interesting journey, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to all of you. (If nothing else, it will keep clickbait sites busy!).”

Although the news was a long time coming, it still had an impact on his fans, who remained loyal to the game show because of him. Such a person tweeted“To be honest, I shed tears thinking about Pat Sajac [sic] no longer host Wheel of Fortune. Iconic moments ever, here is a picture of dudy dude on the wheel chatting about life.”
“Wtf. Take it back now,” tweeted a second person, along with a gif of a woman crying hysterically. Third fan add, “Pat Sajak is leaving Wheel of Fortune and I’m not okay. I’ve been watching him on the show since I was a kid. Happy for him but wow.”
“Wow – never thought this day would come even though logically it was inevitable. You, Vanna & the Wheel are an institution. It will be the end of an era,” a fourth fan recorded. Sajak’s daughter, Maggie Marie, also participated in the quote for show“It’s been fun working with my dad…and we can’t wait to have more fun in Season 41?.”
Sajak’s upcoming retirement was also confirmed by EVP Game Shows at Sony Pictures Television, Suzanne Prete, who released this statement to PEOPLE which reads:
“As the host of Wheel of Fortune, Pat has entertained millions of viewers across America for 40 amazing years. We are extremely grateful and proud to have had Pat as our host all these years, and we look forward to celebrating his outstanding career throughout the coming seasons. Pat has agreed to continue as a consultant on the show for three years after her final year hosting, so we’re thrilled to have her stay close to the Wheel of Fortune family!”

Sajak, who has received 19 nominations for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host, first hinted at his retirement last September when he admitted during an interview:
“The year went by so fast. We are getting closer to the end. It has been a long time [time]. We won’t be doing this for another 40 years. The end is near.”
Thoughts Of The Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Highlights Her Co-Host
Last December, The Blast reported that Sajak’s co-host, Vanna White, spoke openly about her sadness over her upcoming departure from the game show. Touching on her time on “Wheel of Fortune” and her close relationship with the father of two, she revealed:
“I think when Merv Griffin picked us both, 40 and 41 years ago, he saw something between us — a brother-sister relationship. And I think that’s kind of what it is. He saw that we would get along, and we did. We are like a team of brothers and sisters.”
Given that their closeness has sustained them through the years, it’s no wonder White found it “sad” that there was a ticking time in their hosting careers together. In the words of the 66-year-old:
“I don’t want to think about that. I mean, we’re a team. That’s sad. I don’t want to think about it. I can’t imagine. Everyone attributes the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ to Pat and Vanna. We’re like Ken and Barbie, you know? We’ve been in everyone’s house for 40 years, so it’s weird if someone else is handing in my letter.”
