Model Paulina Porizkova makes a very costly mistake when he decided to share a photo of Ukraine on his Instagram page to share his thoughts about the ongoing war with Russia.

Although the Czech-born model wanted to raise awareness of an issue, she didn’t get the photographer’s permission to use the photos she shared, which ended with her making a very “expensive” mistake that she settled out of court.

On Monday afternoon, the “No Filter: The Good, The Bad, and The Beautiful” author shared a photo of herself looking depressed as she stared into the camera. She wore a flowery white robe and her long curly hair was tied back.

“One reason I’ve been posting a lot of self-generated content lately is because I’m scared. Of what, you might be wondering? Because of being sued. Once again,” he wrote in the caption of his Instagram post before sharing his story with his 1.1 million followers.

“This is the deal. Last year, while posting about the horrors in Ukraine, I used a photo I found on IG to illustrate the story. Six months later, I was slapped with a lawsuit by a law firm on behalf of a photographer. I have used his picture without his permission or without paying for its use,” he explained.

“Until then, I didn’t realize this was a thing – reposting pictures from the internet was illegal,” he admitted. “My image is used all the time, and unless someone is trying to sell something with that image, I think it’s fine. Turns out it’s not.”

“There are law firms that do nothing but scour social media to find dummies like me who have enough followers to pay,” he said. “We settled out of court, because of my best intentions though, it was right. I did use an unauthorized photograph – although it carries the message I think the photographer was trying to make – war is evil.”

“And boy, did that turn out to be a costly mistake!” he said, ignoring the settlement costs. Still, the message of the post is clear: be careful what you post online, especially when you don’t know the source of the photo or video you’re sharing.

“So if you find my thread unbearable in its arrogance and narcissism, it’s not going to get any better. You might want to unfollow now before I bother you again,” he concluded. “For those of you who don’t mind- thank you for taking this journey called life with me. I’m so grateful for you!”

She closed her post with the hashtags #betweenjloandbettywhite, #gettingsuedisexpensive, and ended with the closing message: “Yes, this is what I look like in the morning.”

Fans were quick to show support for Paulina in the comments. “This is just lame. I am a lawyer, an intellectual property lawyer, and although there is a legal basis for copyright infringement, your use has been done in support of what the creator intended. You don’t make money from using their images, and what’s more, they get a lot of exposure from your platform. We live in a world full of disputes now, sad actually. … the upside to all of this is that we get to see more of your mug,” one fan commented.

“First of all I’m sorry it happened! I think the photographers will be grateful for the additional exposure for their work and for supporting the Ukrainian people. Second, please keep posting your self-generated content by YOU! It’s not narcissistic or self-obsessed or whatever the patriarchy tells women to belittle us and make posts about ourselves feel shameful. NOT,” another follower wrote.

“While YOU may post YOUR photo, the rest of us scroll through hundreds of photos and when YOUR photo pops up in the feed, I get really excited. I mean: you’re not flooding our feed. And we love to see you,” they continued.

“I honestly never get tired of your face but thank you so much for sharing this. I had no idea. And I can totally see how this could be a difficult and expensive issue. I’m sorry you had to deal with it,” another user shared as fans continue to thank him for his warning.
