Pee-wee Herman Actor Paul Reubens Remembered By Famous Friends: ‘A True Original’

Pee-wee Herman actor Paul Reubens has died following a personal battle with cancer. On Monday afternoon, a statement was posted on his Instagram page announcing his death.

“Last night we said goodbye to Paul Reubens, an American icon actor, comedian, writer, and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positive attitude, his thoughts and his belief in the importance of kindness, ” the statement read.

“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for many years with his tenacity and intelligence,” it continued. “A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the ranks of comedy and in our hearts as a valued friend and a man of extraordinary character and generous spirit.”

A quote from the beloved actor was also shared, saying, “Please accept my apology for not revealing what I have been dealing with for the past six years. I always feel great love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I love you all so much and love making art for you.”

The statement concluded, “Paul requests that any expressions of sympathy be made in honor of his late parents, Judy and Milton Rubenfeld, to Against Cancer or organizations involved in Dementia and Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.”

Following his tragic passing, many in the industry took a moment to pay their respects, including “Orange Is The New Black” actress Natasha Lyonne, who made her TV debut on Pee-wee’s Playhouse when she was just six years old.

Paul Reubens is like no other – a brilliant and original comedian who makes children and their parents laugh at the same time. He never forgets a birthday and shares his genuine joy for silliness with everyone he meets. My family and I will miss him.

Paul Reubens is a talented entertainer and a good person. He brought so much joy to people over the years because Pee Wee, my sister and I loved the character. I had the privilege of working with him on film and he is as amazing in real life as he is on screen. Hard news here.

No tweet can capture the wonder, generosity, artistry, and devout silliness of Paul Reubens. Everyone I know receives countless nonsense memes from Paul on their birthday, and I mean EVERYONE. His real comedy and unfailing kindness is a gift to us all. Damn, this hurts.

Paul and I first met in 1973 at Cal Arts. We remained friends for the next 50 years. Not day to day. Just the kind of friend you can text out of nowhere or have a 3 hour lunch with. And don’t even get me started on birthday texts—he sends them ALL DAY. I do not feel well. pic.twitter.com/GEX9oXuiG1
