A “person of interest” has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a newlywed Wisconsin couple inside a sports bar where the wife worked, authorities announced Monday.
Elkhorn police released an update on the case in which Gina Weingart, 37, and her “inseparable” husband Emerson Weingart, 33, were shot and killed at Sports Page Barr on February 1.
“Officers have been focusing efforts on investigative leads developed over the weekend that identified a person of interest,” the department said in a statement.
“A person of interest has been detained on an unrelated matter while officers continue their investigation.”
The department is not releasing any additional information — including details about “unrelated matters” — “to protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation,” they said.
But it’s common for investigators to arrest suspects and persons of interest on unrelated, lesser warrants as they build their case to arrest them on more serious charges.

The Weingarts, who tied the knot last summer, were the only two people in the bar when a gunman walked in and killed them shortly after midnight last Thursday, police said.
Multiple agencies rushed to the scene after receiving a call of shots fired at the business. The couple were found with fatal gunshot wounds in the bar and their killers have not been found.
Police have not released any motive or description of a potential suspect in the shooting, but Emerson’s father, Jeff Weingart, stands by his belief that someone must have witnessed something.

“It’s heartbreaking,” he told WIS over the weekend. “Someone saw them. Someone saw them. I don’t care, you don’t pull something like that.
“I can’t believe that it’s just him and him in the bar. So somebody saw them, and somebody had to give a description of them, and somebody had to see the car when he drove away, and they better find it.”
Her son and daughter-in-law began dating in 2020 and quickly “became inseparable,” according to their obituaries.

“Gina and Emerson Weingart recently got married in June 2023. Two of the most beautiful, kind and fun-loving couples you will ever know,” their loved ones wrote.
Husband and wife both grew up in Wisconsin. Gina loved to sing and dance while Emerson was an avid fisherman and a huge Green Bay Packers fan, the online tribute said.
The owner of the bar where the couple were killed said they were longtime regulars who had become close to staff and other patrons. He ends up offering Gina a part-time gig at the watering hole where Emerson often hangs out to keep her company when she works late into the night.
“Their lives are just beginning, and I believe I speak for our entire Sports Page family when I say we are completely devastated by what happened,” Jordan Barr wrote on Facebook. “It was a despicable act of violence that has shaken us all to our core.”
Barr called their killers “cowards.”
Police have not said whether the couple were specifically targeted by their killers or if it was a random attack.
