Peta Murgatroyd is celebrating the birthday of her late father, Derek John Murgatroyd.
Although it’s been months since her beloved father passed away, the professional Latin dancer’s social media updates have proven that she still hasn’t gotten over the tragedy. He went into detail about the last interaction he had with him as he marked the patriarch’s 82nd birthday, sparking reactions from hundreds of thousands of his followers and supporters.

Peta’s life changed forever when her beloved father passed away at the age of 81 on Thursday, December 29, 2022. At the time, she shared two images on Instagram — the first of which was the look she and Derek looked at each other while above boat and the second shows how he put his hand on his father’s weak hand.
Under the photo, the two-time “Dancing with the Stars” champion called the late octogenarian the “greatest dad” and “teddy bear,” adding:
“I know you’ll keep riding with me until I see you again. I hope I made you proud for these 36 years. You are my everything and I will miss you until my days here are over.”
Nearly six months later, the 37-year-old is back with another update, showering Derek with a posthumous 82nd birthday tribute. She began with an avalanche of images highlighting some of her fondest memories of her dad, including sweet family dates, meeting and holding her grandson, wearing a suit to what looked like a dance, and finally sharing a big hug.

“Thank you for always being a happy smile. Thank you for always being there for me and thank you for always calling. Today is your birthday and you as a normal cancer sufferer like me want nothing more than to spend it with family,” the accompanying caption began. Peta admits that she misses her dad “a lot,” though “words are very inadequate,” continuing:
“My heart hurts to hear your voice again. Know that you miss immeasurably. I still feel the warmth of your hand in mine the last time we said goodbye. I told you.. “don’t go anywhere ok dad?!” Your words back to me were.. “well where do you think I want to go honey?!” You never want to look like you’re done, you never want to scare me or make it seem like it’s the end. I will never forget it.”
In conclusion, the mother-of-two declared her undying love for Derek and admitted that dealing with his birthday was “because of the king”. As well as liking the heartbreaking Instagram post over 30k times, several people took to the comments section to match it, with ballroom dancer Jenna Johnson dropping some red heart emojis.

In June, Peta told her 994k Instagram followers about her memory loss when she welcomed her second child with husband Maksim Chmerkovskiy. According to The Blast, the new mom showed off her son, Rio John Chmerkovskiy, in an adorable clip that captures the unforgettable moments of his arrival, set to singer Natalie Taylor’s 2016 single, “Loved You Before.”
Beginning the caption with a walk down memory lane, the choreographer recalled how her husband raced to the hospital “not knowing if he was going to make it or not.” As it turns out, the then-expecting superstar didn’t have to wait too long to meet her baby boy, because “she was in the right place to push him with 4 pushes.” Elaborating further, he revealed:
“There were moments after the birth where I looked at my mom and said “did you text dad?”…I had tears in my eyes when I realized I’d forgotten he was gone. It was a moment for me. I know I feel his spirit there and I know he will look down and protect all of us here.”
