During a March appearance on the “Real Ones with Jon Bernthal” podcast, the “Meet Cute” actor talked about that fateful day and how he learned of his father’s death.
He said, per Mirror, “My dad told me he was going to pick me up from school on 9/11. I was invited by my mother. He didn’t tell me what happened for three days. He kept telling me, ‘Daddy’s at work,’ ‘He’ll be home,’ whatever. I do not know.”
Pete shared with Bernthal that his mother kept him from going out or watching TV for days. Then, one day, he “turned on the TV and I just saw my dad on TV.” That’s how Pete found out about the attack on the World Trade Center. He added, “I was like, ‘Oh, OK.’ And they were like, these are all firefighters who, like, died.

During the podcast interview, Pete talked about how “weird” the experience was for him and his family. He explained that they weren’t actually sure of Scott’s death “for, like, three weeks” as search and rescue continued into the World Trade ruins.
He said, “They’re looking for people, you know? They’ve pulled people out of shit, and there’s just kind of hope. Like, it’s just up and down and nobody knows how to deal with it.”
The “King of Staten Island” star later reflected on how much the loss made him appreciate his mother. He stated, “That’s why, as I got older, I was like, ‘Man, my mom is great.’ Pete also shared that losing Scott left him with abandonment issues, which he still struggles with.
He said, “You know, dad said he would come pick you up and he didn’t. All my life, I’ve been like, I don’t trust anybody, and I’m trying to learn how to trust people — and Hollywood is not the best place to learn that skill.”
