A passenger on a crowded flight in India was arrested after he tried to open an emergency door in mid-air to jump, police said.
Officials said Biswajit Debnath, 41, tried desperately to open the emergency door of an aircraft during a domestic flight from Guwahati to Agartala on Thursday.
Chaos ensued after Debnath rose from his seat and headed for the door, prompting one of the 180 passengers on board to rush after him in a desperate attempt to stop him.
Video footage circulating on social media showed passengers operating the emergency doors as the plane approached its destination.
Crew members immediately intervened, but Debnath initially refused to be restrained, officials told the Press Trust of India.
In an attempt to restrain him, fellow passengers dragged him towards an empty seat, where he remained until the plane landed safely.

The ordeal comes just weeks after a crazed man shouting “Allahu Akbar” tried to open the door midway through a flight from Israel to England on September 4 – before a brave passenger stepped up and tackled him.
Victor Troboloni, an Albanian traveling to visit his ailing mother in London, grabbed the large, unidentified assailant and held him with other passengers while crew tied him up with zip ties.

Fellow passengers helped Troboloni restrain him until a flight attendant was able to find a cable tie to restrain him until the plane landed in Belgrade, Serbia.
In August, Delta passengers rushed to the aid of a flight attendant who was slashed by a man who allegedly threatened to behead her after their plane landed in New Orleans, holding her down until authorities arrived.
And in March, a United Airlines domestic flight saw several passengers restrain a maniac who allegedly tried to open an emergency door and stabbed a flight attendant.
