A Florida plastic surgeon is under investigation after his wife died while he was giving her “several” procedures – allegedly while she was overmedicated with drugs only used because she had run out of regular drugs.
Mother of three Hillary Brown, 33, seized and suffered a heart attack when her husband, Dr. Ben Brown, 40, is undergoing surgery Nov. 21 at Restore Plastic Surgery in Gulf Breeze, USA Today reports.
He spent a week in a coma before his family decided to take him off life support because he had suffered extensive brain damage from a lack of oxygen, according to the outlet. His organs have been donated.
A 911 call indicated a female patient was in cardiac arrest after possibly “overmedicating,” the Pensacola News Journal reported, citing call notes.
“Hillary Brown was in the process of several surgical procedures when she had several seizures and then had a heart attack,” the statement added, without detailing what surgery she was undergoing at the time.
Brown told his wife’s parents, Marty and Dixie Ellington, that he had run out of his usual medication, so had put his wife on a different medication, they told USA Today.
“We want answers,” Marty Ellington said, also questioning why his son-in-law didn’t have more personnel and emergency equipment on hand.
The death of a Florida plastic surgeon’s wife is under investigation after she suffered a heart attack while he was operating on her.
“We have not been given an answer. If it’s a mistake, it’s a mistake, but it doesn’t bring my son back,” said the grieving father.
“I don’t want his money. I don’t want anything. All I want is an answer because I feel we owe it to my daughter.”
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death, the report said.
Hillary Brown, 33, died after surgery by her husband, Dr Ben Brown, at his clinic.
The office “often (conducts) death investigations when the death is unexpected or the death occurs under unusual circumstances,” spokeswoman Jillian Durkin said in a statement to USA Today.
“The cause and manner of death are awaiting the receipt of the autopsy protocol from the District One medical examiner’s office,” he said.
Hillary and her husband have been married for about two years.
“The autopsy protocol typically takes several months because it typically relies on extensive laboratory and toxicology testing and information gathered by our Major Crimes detectives,” added Durkin.

Brown wrote about his wife on November 24, when she was in a coma.
“We need prayers for a miracle. Hillary suffered a heart attack on Tuesday evening,” he wrote in a social media post cited by the outlet.
“We called 911 and started CPR. His heart is back but his brain is not working properly,” he added. “Hillary Ellington Brown you are my soul mate, my world, my everything. Please come back. Please!”
His wife, who has three young children from a previous marriage and also works at a clinic, has been married to Brown – who has two sons – for about two years, the Journal reported.
Hillary Brown reportedly has a sometimes “volatile” relationship with her husband.
Their relationship was sometimes “erratic,” Marty told the outlet, adding that he mostly enjoyed their life together and asked her to do cosmetic work on him.
“She is very pretty. We kept telling him, ‘Why are you doing this?'” he told the outlet about their conversation.
On April 7, Hillary wrote on Instagram: “I’ve been guilty of loving someone so much, I started to fix them and failed to realize they were breaking me.”
He did not refer to a specific relationship in the post.
Restore Plastic Surgery has two malpractice lawsuits open against it, though only one lists Brown as a defendant, according to USA Today.
In the case, Wendy and William Carden allege that she used a “foreign material” in breast surgery after a mastectomy without her consent in 2018, causing infection and sepsis, the outlet reported.
Brown is accused of “negligently failing to periodically monitor the position of the upper leg,” causing Wendy alleged nerve damage and other permanent injuries.
