A woman killed by Las Vegas police investigating a domestic battery complaint last week struck an officer in the head before she was shot by another officer, according to body-worn camera video released to reporters on Monday.
Sandra Lopez-Ochoa, 25, used a kitchen knife in an overhand motion to injure the officer as she began to pull his wrist from the seat on a couch in an East Las Vegas apartment, according to a video and description by Clark County Sheriff’s Assistant Sasha Larkin.
Officer Rudy Sacba fired five shots from his 9mm handgun, killing Lopez-Ochoa, Larkin said.
Body camera video of the injured male officer showed blood dripping from his eyebrow following the shooting.
The officer’s name has not been made public.
“Hey, are you okay?” Sacba asked him.
“Yes,” the officer replied. His camera showed blood on the blue surgical gloves on his hands.
Larkin described the officer’s injuries as “definitely more than minor,” but said he was treated at a hospital, is recovering at home, and is expected to return to active police duty.

Sacba, 32, a police officer since 2021, is on paid leave pending an investigation by the department and the district attorney into the shooting.
Larkin said Lopez-Ochoa and her brother, whose name was not released, each called police about 1 a.m. Friday.
The brother told police that Lopez-Ochoa tried to strangle him. Lopez-Ochoa, sitting on a couch, told officers that the brother assaulted her.

The incident was the second fatal shooting in five years involving Las Vegas police, Larkin said.
That compares to seven shootings at this time last year, including four fatalities.
