Pope Francis says ‘sexual pleasure is a gift from God’ but condemns porn

Pope Francis said “sexual pleasure is a gift from God,” but warned Catholics not to engage in pornography.

The 87-year-old religious leader told a crowd outside the Vatican on Wednesday that sex is something to be cherished, but that it is ultimately “undermined by pornography.”

“We must defend love,” he said, according to The Guardian. “Winning the battle of passions can be a lifelong endeavor.”

The Argentine-born religious leader said “satisfaction without a relationship can generate a form of addiction” and lust leads to “dangerous immorality.”

Continuing the long list, the pure-of-heart-and-body pope added: “Lust seizes, it robs, it devours in haste, it does not want to listen to anything else but only to its own needs and pleasures; Lust judges every courtship to be boring, it does not seek the synthesis between reason, impulse and feeling that will help us to lead an intelligent existence,” the pope said, according to the Telegraph.

He also said lust often leads to one partner trying to “own” the other and can become an object, the British outlet reported.

This is not the first time Pope Francis has discussed porn. On Oct. 2022, he admitted he knew priests and nuns also watched porn but warned them and lay members “the devil comes in from there.”

“If you can cancel it from your phone, then cancel it, then you won’t have temptation on your hands,” he said at the time.

His latest statement comes after it emerged last week that Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez – head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith – had written a book in 1998 that described male and female orgasms in detail.

Critics labeled the book “disgraceful” and conservative Catholics began calling for his sacking, according to the Telegraph.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church also spoke on Sunday to defend the church’s recent landmark decision to approve blessings for same-sex couples.

Addressing the backlash, including some priests who said they would not implement the rules, the pope said: “Sometimes decisions are not accepted, but in most cases when decisions are not accepted, it is because they are not understood.”
