A 6-year-old Oregon boy was mauled to death by two dogs at a family friend’s home Tuesday as the child was getting ready to go to school.
Police were greeted at the door by a woman covered in blood after being called to the horrific scene at a Portland home just after 7:40 a.m.
The woman, a friend of the man’s grandmother, who has not been named, told officers that her large Great Dane-Mastiff mix jumped on the child after she followed him into her home’s garage, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
“We understand that the homeowner/dog owner did everything they could to stop this attack, at one point even grabbing a gun – it never got that far,” PPB Public Information Officer Mike Benner told Fox 12.
“He did everything he could to save this boy’s life.”
The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The family friend was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries to his hand.
According to officials, the boy was dropped off by his grandmother at the dog owner’s house to be taken to school, a daily routine between the family.
The children had previously been told to stay away from the dogs and the garage where they were kept because they were dangerous, police said.

Authorities said there were no previous reports that the dog had ever been a problem.
Although both dogs were involved in the attack, one has been labeled the “primary attacker.”
The pair was taken into the custody of Multnomah County Animal Services.

It is not yet clear whether the family friend will face charges over the tragic attack. He allegedly grabbed the gun during the struggle, but did not fire, Benner said.
“I speak for everyone in the bureau when I say that our hearts are broken for this little boy, for his family, for his friends. I mean, any time something like this happens it’s a shock to the conscience but for this to happen just weeks before Christmas is unimaginable,” Benner said.
The PPB Child Abuse Team led the investigation with the assistance of the Homicide Division.

The persecution is the latest in a string of vicious dog attacks.
An Iowa mother lost both her legs and part of her arm and needed facial reconstruction after she was attacked last week by three rampaging pit bulls.
A 6-year-old Florida boy was killed on July 4 when he stumbled into a bedroom, where his family’s 3-year-old pit bull mix bit him on the chest and head, potentially because of a constant fear of fireworks.
