Portugal president stands by controversial cleavage comment

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has come under fire for his scathing remarks about a young woman’s breasts during a visit to Canada last week.

De Sousa, 74, was visiting Toronto on an official visit on Friday when he was greeted by a mother and daughter from his country, according to The Telegraph.

“The daughter is more beautiful than her mother,” the president said.

“But the daughter may have caught the flu. Have you seen her cleavage?” the politician from Portugal’s conservative PSD party added, smiling.

A political opponent in Portugal said he recently mocked an overweight woman by offering her a seat before asking “Can the chair take it?” — and demanded an apology for both comments.

“This is 2023. You can’t just walk up to a woman you don’t know and make a joke about her weight or about her cleavage,” Isabel Moreira, a member of parliament for the Socialist Party, reportedly said.

When pressed by reporters, De Sousa stood by his statement, according to the report.

“It’s not a sexist comment. I don’t think like that and neither do young women or old women. It’s not sexist at all,” he stressed.

De Sousa also recently made headlines for defending Luis Rubiales, who resigned as head of the Spanish football federation for forcibly kissing a player in the country’s women’s World Cup squad.

When asked what he thought about the incident, which is under criminal investigation, de Sousa reportedly said it was a “minor issue” compared to the war in Ukraine.
