Powerball winner Edwin Castro’s rival says he’s too broke to play lottery — and maintains he’s the ‘true winner’

Billionaire Powerball jackpot winner Edwin Castro’s rival has revealed he is now too proud to play the lottery — but maintains he is a “real” winner.

Jose Rivera previously said he still plays the California state lottery but told The Sun Saturday that he doesn’t “have a dollar in my pocket.”

“I can’t do it anymore,” he said. “I bought a few tickets but I’m done with them. I don’t want to play games now.

“And I don’t have a dollar in my pocket, it’s sad. I’m struggling and my family is struggling.”

Although he said it’s “not about the money right now,” Rivera is still on a mission to “prove me the real winner” and insists that “Castro is lying.”

Rivera, who has been accused of filing a false police report, came forward after Castro won the historic $2 billion prize claiming that he had bought the ticket before it was “stolen” by his host and ended up in Castro’s hands.

CCTV footage reportedly showed Castro buying the ticket at Joe’s Service Centre, said his lawyer David De Paoli.

Despite the footage, Rivera has declared “war” on his rival and claimed “innocence because I am the rightful winner.”

“Castro is a fake, a liar, a lying bastard,” he said in fiery words outside a Pasadena court on Thursday, according to The Sun.

Rivera, who is no longer unemployed, told The Sun that he “can’t afford a lawyer right now” because it is “expensive”. He was represented by a public defender in his criminal case.

He pleaded not guilty at his trial.

Rivera is due back in court for his criminal case on February 20. A case management hearing for his civil suit will be held on February 27.

De Paoli said the civil suit was “baseless.”

“At some point, it will become clear that Edwin G. Castro is the rightful owner of the ticket,” he told The Sun.
