TASHKENT – One person was killed and 162 injured in a powerful explosion Thursday at a warehouse near Tashkent airport that set off a fire and shattered windows in a nearby apartment block, authorities in Uzbekistan said.

A teenage boy died after a window frame fell on him, the health ministry said in a statement, adding that 24 people were hospitalized, but did not face a threat to their lives, while 138 were treated for injuries.

Flights are operating as usual at the international airport in the capital, the administration said.

In videos and photos on social media, flames shot into the night sky, with a large plume of smoke hanging over the warehouse, but the cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

A special laboratory has been set up at the scene to investigate the blast, the emergency ministry said.

“Due to the quick action of emergency ministry personnel, the fire area has been reduced,” he added on the Telegram messaging app.
