When asked who he would like to work with as his influence grows stronger, Brunson admits that he prefers to work with his peers. He explains, “Not to be clumsy, but I really enjoy working with my peers, people who are across the pond from me, or someone whose talent I think hasn’t been showcased yet.”

He referenced the newest addition to the second season of “Abbott Elementary,” Keyla Monterroso Mejia, who played the role of Ashley’s teacher’s aide. However, when asked if there was a household name he would consider, the brilliant creator wasted no time mentioning Kaling.

The “Big Mouth” actress said, “Mindy Kaling. She’s had a bit of a renaissance going on. I don’t think what she’s doing is easy to do, and I feel like people are sleeping on it,”

He continued, citing “The Office” alumni as deserving of praise for breaking boundaries in their jobs in a competitive industry. In her words, “I get it, she’s Mindy Kaling, so they’re not like that. But if she was a guy, people wouldn’t stop talking about her. What she’s doing is so hard to do.”

He went on to praise the hit Netflix series “Never Have I Ever,” which was created and directed by Kaling. In his words, “Never Have I Ever had a K-pop-level stand-up around him, and ‘The Sex Life of a College Girl’ is a really good king show that people can’t wait to come back to.”

Per Insider, the actress hails from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is the daughter of Indian immigrants Avu Chokalingam, her father, and Swati Roysircar, her mother, who sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2012.

Kaling attended Dartmouth College and went on to intern on Conan O’Brien’s talk show while still in college. His rise to fame began at the age of 24 when he wrote a comedy play that debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2002.

The drama’s success led to a creative writer who was on staff writing the first season of the iconic sitcom “The Office.” Kaling, recalling her humble beginnings in the show’s first season writing, said, “I was the youngest, and I had no TV experience… I was very polite”. He, however, flourished and continued to direct and produce several episodes of the hit show until 2013.

In a shocking revelation, the “Ocean’s 8” star previously revealed that after “The Office” was nominated for an Emmy, the “Academy” tried to cut him from the list of producers and asked him to share his direct contributions.

The screenwriter, however, stood his ground and fought for what was rightfully his, and fortunately for him, his other co-producers backed him up and made sure he remained credited.

Moving on to bigger things, the talented actress went on to write, produce and star in her show, “The Mindy Project,” which did quite well and had high ratings. In a recent update, Kaling officially signed on to co-write the third film of the trilogy, “Legally Blonde.”

Despite the success of “Abbott Elementary” Brunson has been praised for spearheading the network’s comedy comeback. However, the “A Black Lady Sketch Show” star rejected the compliment wholeheartedly.

As previously reported, Brunson, during a friendly chat, cleared the air and confirmed that broadcast comedy has played a role in our society long before the start of his brilliant show.

In his words, “Networks, all this time, still put big comedies on the air. CBS especially has launched shows with very high ratings, like, ‘Young Sheldon.'” He went on to add, “The Big Bang Theory has been on the air forever . And ABC: ‘The Crooners,’ ‘The Goldbergs,’ ‘Black-ish.’ They hold their own.”

However, “Abbott Elementary” remains a standout show and has posted ABC’s best numbers since “Modern Family” ended its run in 2020.
