Rare Babe Ruth rookie baseball card up for auction could break $12.5M world record

Baseball fans, collectors of sports memorabilia and fans of America’s pastime are getting ready as the world’s most expensive baseball card, according to Robert Edward Auctions of Chester, New Jersey, will be auctioned on November 17, 2023.

The opening event is set for Nov 15. 2023, in Baltimore, Maryland and in New York City at private locations on Nov. 29. 2023.

Babe Ruth’s 1914 rookie baseball card is said to be one of the rarest cards in the world.

It is expected to sell for a minimum price of $10 million — and could even break the world record set at $12.5 million, according to Brian Dwyer, president of Robert Edward Auctions.

The auction will run from 17 Nov to 3 Dec 2023.

The card will go on display at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore on November 15.

“We will also hold a private reception for interested bidders in New York City on November 29,” Dwyer said.

Said Dwyer, “The 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth is the most important card ever made, as it represents Babe Ruth’s origins in the game of baseball and in the trading card hobby.”

Pictured on the card is 19-year-old Babe Ruth of his hometown Baltimore Orioles of the International League.

The 2 5/8″ x 3 5/8″ card features Ruth as a member of the Baltimore minor league club and is part of a set of cards featuring player images on the front and team schedules on the back.

By the end of the year, Ruth will be on the Red Sox — and the team will no longer exist the following season, adding to the history of this card, Dwyer told FOX Business.

“This is one of only 10 examples in existence and is the first publicly available example in over a decade,” he said.

“When this set was issued by the Baltimore News in 1914, the newspaper issued the cards in red and blue versions,” Dwyer said.

“This one, which is red, is graded VG (‘Very Good’) 3 by the SGC. Only one example is graded higher (PSA 4). This is also the best condition example to appear at auction in over 15 years.”

He added, “We believe that these cards will sell for up to $10 million or more.”

How do auction houses acquire these cards?

Robert Edward Auctions has a long relationship with the consignor, and the individual ultimately chose to sell the card in its fall auction because of the company’s strong pedigree in vintage sports collecting, Dwyer said.

He specifically referred to “our record sale of the famous T206 Honus Wagner card for $6.6 million in 2021, as well as the 1921 game-used Babe Ruth bat that sold in our last auction for $1.3 million,” Dwyer said of the consignor. .

Why can this baseball card set a world record?

There is significant pent-up demand from prominent sports card collectors for these cards, according to Dwyer.

“And we believe that its rarity and importance will attract a new wave of buyers as rare examples come to market,” he said.

“When you compare it to some other legendary and record-setting cards like the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and the 1909 T206 Honus Wagner, it pales in comparison to the rarity scale next to Ruth.”

Why the enduring interest in Babe Ruth?

Babe Ruth was almost single-handedly responsible for ushering in a new era in baseball following the “dead ball” era, Dwyer said.

“From singles and doubles, the Great Bambino treated fans to massive home runs that remain the benchmark for power hitting to this day,” said Dwyer.

“He was the catalyst behind four World Series championships for the Yankees as well as three World Series titles for the Red Sox before that.”

In addition, his 60 home runs in 1927 set a new precedent and made him a larger-than-life figure not only on the field but across American pop culture.

“Even today, the long home run is often defined as ‘Ruthian’ and he is famous in the film favorite ‘The Sandlot’ as ‘less than a god but more than a man,'” Dwyer suggests.

The Babe Ruth card is expected to sell for a minimum of $10 million, and could even break the world record set at $12.5 million, according to Dwyer.

“Babe Ruth is one of the most iconic figures in American history.”

What kind of interest is expected for this card?

There is an understanding among collectors that this opportunity may not come again for years, Dwyer said.

“After more than a decade without the opportunity to acquire it through auction, we expect interest in this card to be very strong among collectors and investors,” he said.

“Not only will the winning bidder make history, we believe they will own one of the most important collections in existence.”

Are certain collectors always a part of this type of sale?

Dwyer also said “Babe Ruth’s 1914 Baltimore News is the most important card ever made, as it represents Babe Ruth’s origins in the game of baseball and in the trading card hobby.”

Robert Edward Auctions has a loyal contingent of bidders at their auctions, Dwyer said, but with the magnitude of this card, he expects great interest.

“We expect some new collectors, enthusiasts and other high-value individuals to join the bidding process,” Dwyer told FOX Business.

How to capture a piece of baseball history

For anyone who wants to see the card for themselves, it will be on public display at the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum in Baltimore on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 2pm to 4pm ET.

Additionally, these red cards will be displayed alongside examples of blue cards, Dwyer said.
