A Kentucky cop who won the reality TV show “Survivor” raised eyebrows when he introduced a law banning people from having sex with their first cousins — and he later claimed the change was made by accident.
Republican Rep. Nick Wilson went viral Tuesday after sponsoring House Bill 269, which would remove “first cousins” from the list of relatives that make it illegal for someone to have sex, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
Other relatives who remain in the state’s mahram incest statute include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings.
Wilson, who won the 37th season of the CBS show “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” in 2018, attracted the attention of Eliza Orlins, a New York public defender who previously appeared as a contestant on “Survivor: Vanuatu” and “Survivor: Micronesia,” according to Newsweek.

He called the bill “absolutely crazy” on social media, where he took a stab at pols.
“Oh God, I got bad news…This news is related to the winner of David vs. Goliath for Survivor Nick Wilson, who later used the fame he gained from winning Survivor to run for Kentucky state legislator and was elected,” he said to X.
“Nick Wilson not only supports but has introduced a bill that would reclassify incest in the state of Kentucky to not include your own first cousin,” he said.
“Kentucky, like many other places, faces many issues, and these are Nick’s legislative priorities,” Orlins said, urging his followers to “contact anyone you know in Kentucky and tell them to flood his office. [with phone calls] and tell this story.”

On Wednesday, Wilson took to Facebook to claim that it was all a mistake.
“The purpose of the bill is to add ‘sexual intercourse’ to the mahram incest statute. Currently, mahram incest only applies in the case of sexual intercourse. So sexual touch/groping by an uncle, stepfather or anyone who has a family relationship is not included in mahram incest,” he wrote.
“My bill makes that kind of sexual intercourse a Class D Felony, unless the victim is under 12, then it increases the penalty to a Class C Felony,” Wilson continued.
“During the drafting process, there was an inadvertent change, which struck ‘first cousin’ from the list of relationships included under the law of incest, and I failed to add it back,” he wrote.

“At today’s session, I will withdraw HB 269 and refile the bill with the ‘first cousin’ language intact. The fact that I was able to file a bill, catch the error, withdraw the bill and refile within 24 hours shows that we have a good system,” Wilson declared.
“I understand that I have made a mistake, but I sincerely hope that my mistake does not affect the chances of a corrected version of the bill. It is a good bill, and I hope it will get a second chance,” he added.
After winning the 2018 show, Wilson returned for the 40th season, which featured winners from the previous show in 2020.
In November 2022, she ran unopposed for the 82nd Kentucky House District after Republican incumbent Regina Huff retired.
