Refugee mom who fled war in Ukraine with teen son dies after being struck by car in Wales

A Ukrainian mother who fled the war two years ago with her teenage son died tragically in a car crash in Wales, it was revealed on Tuesday.

Tetiana Martynova, 40, died after being hit by a Chevrolet Captiva as she walked on a road in Morriston at around 6:20pm local time on Wednesday, the BBC reported, citing South Wales Police.

Martynova is from Kharkiv, Ukraine, and came to Wales with her 14-year-old son in July 2022, months after the Russian invasion began, according to the non-profit organization Voice of Ukraine Wales.

“Tanya has been a staunch and passionate supporter of Voice of Ukraine Wales and will be greatly missed by all who knew her,” the organization said.

Host Matynova told the BBC she was known in the area as a “wonderful, multilingual, intelligent, high-flying, hard-working woman” and a “stalwart” of Ukrainian society.

“His many friends and colleagues are disappointed by his sudden departure. Our thoughts and prayers are with you [her son] Illia in Wales and Tania’s family in Ukraine,” they told the outlet.

“Tania became like a daughter to both of us. Our tears flow for an incredible young woman. Ukraine has lost one of the best.”

South Wales Police are appealing for any witnesses who may come forward with information or dashcam footage.
