On the latest episode of “Good Morning America,” King explores how his late son continues to influence his life posthumously. Asked how things have been over the past two years, the Los Angeles native stated:

“I am a different person now than I was on January 19. Grief is a journey, you know? I understand that grief is love that has nowhere to go and we all deal with it differently.”

King later revealed that Ian, whom he honored at the Oscars by wearing his favorite color — orange, battles mental health challenges. As he told Robin Roberts:

“When it comes to depression, people expect it to look a certain way, and they expect it to look heavy. And people expect that … having to experience this and not being able to have time to sit with Ian’s choice, which I respect and understand, you know, that he does not want [sic] being here again, that’s a hard thing for other people to accept because they don’t appreciate our experience, don’t appreciate Ian’s journey.”

Regina King: ‘I’m So Angry With God’

As a mother, King expressed how witnessing Ian’s struggle made her feel very disappointed in God. In his words:

“I was very angry with God. You know, why is that weight given to Ian? With all the things we’d been through with therapy, with psychiatrists and programs, and Ian was like, ‘I’m tired of talking, Mom.’” she recalled.

Although time has passed since his son’s death, the 53-year-old still feels guilty, especially when wondering what he could have done differently to prevent it.

Amidst the grief, King insists that he doesn’t shy away from discussing Ian, who often accompanies him on the red carpet.

The “Watchmen” actor mentioned that he still finds moments that he describes as small reminders from the universe that his son’s presence remains. He affectionately calls them “Ian-spirations.”
