Rep. Elise Stefanik claps back at censure motion from ‘failed’ NYC Dem Dan Goldman over her support of Jan. 6 ‘insurrectionists’

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) faces a motion of censure from Manhattan and Rep. Brooklyn Democrat Dan Goldman on Wednesday for his support for the “rebels” who stormed the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, and temporarily halted the election count.

“January 6th was the worst attack on American democracy since the Civil War and Congressman Stefanik’s continued and ongoing support of the perpetrators of the rebellion is insulting,” Goldman said in a statement.

“In putting her personal ambitions above her integrity, Congresswoman Stefanik has become Donald Trump’s biggest congressional cheerleader, even though our home state of New York is fiercely against him.”

He then denounced Stefanik’s recent use of the term “hostage” to describe mobs who have been federally indicted for their attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election – saying it “demeans the real hostages” from Israel and the US who were kidnapped by terrorist Hamas on 7 Oct.

The GOP House conference chairman said during a Jan. 7 interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he still “has concerns about the treatment of the Jan. 6 hostages” and the “integrity of the election” but “condemns the violence” from the mob.

More than 330 defendants have received federal prison sentences in connection with the riots, the Justice Department announced last July.

Goldman also said the congressman’s rhetoric glossed over the January 6 tragedy, saying Trump supporters “caused” the death of a Capitol police officer and four others who later committed suicide, as well as hundreds of injuries to other law enforcement officers.

“His rhetoric betrays his oath of office and the Dewan Rakyat and must be strongly condemned,” he said.

Stefanik has also filed an ethics complaint against DC US District Judge Beryl Howell, Goldman said, accusing the lawmaker of having a “cozy” relationship with President Biden’s deputy attorney general while presiding over the 45th president’s federal impeachment over his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.

Goldman called the complaint “false” and said Stefanik “wrongly” characterized special counsel Jack Smith’s allegations as “an attempt to criminalize the First Amendment” — an argument Trump’s defense attorneys have made.

Stefanik’s office issued a scathing statement in response that referred to Goldman’s resolution as a “desperate” attempt by “Failed Far Left House Democrats” to undermine him for being “one of the most effective Congressmen who every day exposes Democrats and corruption and lies Joe Biden.”

“Elise has never been more supported in her district, by her fellow Republicans, and across Upstate NY and America as she stands up for the American people especially in election integrity and the rule of law to save the Republic,” Stefanik executive director Alex DeGrasse said.

“And Goldman is a corrupt radical New York Democrat who unethically traded tens of millions of dollars in stocks while defaulting on rent, took money from friends Jeff Epstein, funded terrorist groups like Hamas through his family foundation, laundered millions through his family foundation for attacking Republican Congressmen, and supporting radicals such as [New York Attorney General] Tish James is involved in a witch hunt [sic] against President Trump while freeing violent criminals on our streets,” he added, citing a report detailing the accusations.

“And Goldman called for President Trump to be ‘eliminated’ and widely condemned for his dangerous and violent threats. And Goldman and the Democrats are desperate because they know Joe Biden is going to lose this November.”

In a subsequent press release, Stefanik’s office also pointed to Goldman’s past social media posts that claimed the Georgia Republican “stole the governorship” in 2018 and committed “voter fraud” by purging voters from the register that had been inactive for more than seven years.

Goldman’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the post.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told Punchbowl News that Goldman’s resolution, which almost certainly won’t pass the Republican-controlled lower house, is “absurd.”

“He is one of the best leaders and best communicators in Congress,” he said of Stefanik. “He did an incredible job and the idea that he would use slander to attack a political opponent is ridiculous.”

Cenouncing members has been a rare disciplinary action in the House for most of its history, but three Democratic representatives have received formal reprimands so far in the current Congress.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) came under fire for making false allegations about collusion between the Russian government and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, while Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) received disciplinary action for antisemitic remarks made amid Israel’s war with Hamas terrorists.

Goldman voted to support Tlaib’s censure, but not to censure Schiff or Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), who was criticized for falsely pulling a fire alarm in a House office building while Democrats scrambled to delay a vote on the government funding bill on Sept. 30.
