Rep. Jamaal Bowman set to face a censure vote over fire alarm pull

A Democrat-led effort to kill a resolution aimed at impeaching Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) failed on Wednesday, setting up a final vote on whether to reprimand “Squad” lawmakers for raising false fire alarms.

Bowman could face a vote of censure as early as Thursday after a motion to table a special resolution by Rep. Lisa McCalin (R-Mich.) was defeated in a party vote 201-216-1.

“It hurts me and my colleagues and the American people that the Republican Party is not serious and can’t legislate,” Bowman said on the House floor today. “I am in no way obstructing the official proceedings.”

The impeachment effort stems from a Sept. 30 incident in which Bowman, in an effort to stop a vote on a measure that would have kept the government from shutting down, according to Republicans, pulled the fire alarm at the Cannon House Office Building, triggering an evacuation.

Bowman, 47, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of pulling a false fire alarm and agreed to write an apology to Capitol Police and pay a $1,000 fine.

The House Ethics Committee chose not to open an investigation into Bowman’s conduct last month.

The congressman claimed he accidentally pulled the fire alarm, thinking the lever would “open the door” he was trying to walk through at the time.

McCalin’s resolution, introduced Tuesday, requires congressional action within two legislative days.

It alleges that Bowman “disrupted the work of Congress while the vote was in progress” and that his actions were “a theatrical attempt to create panic, thereby endangering the safety and well-being of Members of the House, staff and members of the public on the Capitol grounds.”

Bowman would become only the 27th lawmaker in House history to be impeached if the resolution passes, as expected based on Wednesday’s vote.

If censured, Bowman would have to stand in the well of the basement and listen to the reading of the reprimanding resolution.

In November, the House voted to impeach Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for defending the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel and calling for the Jewish state to be wiped out.
