House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer — who is leading a string of investigations into the Biden family’s business dealings — believes an impeachment inquiry against the president is likely.
“I think there is a consensus in our conference now that we need to go to an impeachment inquiry. Obviously, that’s going to be Speaker McCarthy’s call,” Comer told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Wednesday night.
“I feel like that’s going to happen.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has actively dangled the prospect of opening an investigation, but some moderate members of the wafer-thin House GOP majority of 222 to 212 were not sold.
Some like Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) has publicly signaled concern about doing so, raising doubts about such an investigation gaining approval.

As a solution, McCarthy could skip the tradition of holding a floor vote to start a formal impeachment inquiry, just as her predecessor, Speaker emeritus Nancy Pelosi (R-Calif.) did against former President Donald Trump.
Comer has been the GOP leader in the lower house to investigate Biden and their foreign business dealings, which would be the basis of such an effort.
He has also long traded insinuations that Hunter Biden and other family members are involved in influence peddling.

Recently, Comer received revelations that the president had previously used a pseudonym.
“Democrats have been silent in Washington in defense of Joe Biden,” Comer said, claiming there were emails sent to Hunter Biden in which the elder Biden used a pseudonym and discussed Ukraine policy.
White House officials have forcefully rejected discussions of impeachment investigations and allegations of misconduct.
“Just when you thought @HouseGOP shenanigans couldn’t get any dumber, they start fussing about email “pseudonyms” Newsflash: government leaders for decades have been using aliases to avoid spam & hacking Do they think he’s just joe dot biden @? LOL Wonder what some of the Congressman’s emails are!” White House spokesman Ian Sams posted on X, formerly Twitter.

President Biden and the White House have insisted that he does not discuss business with his son, but Comer thinks the opposite is true.
“I’m here to tell you, Sean, Joe Biden is front and center,” Comer said. “He’s meeting with every person he claims he’s never met, that he’s never spoken to, and we’re putting together a timeline where Hunter Biden traveled to many of these countries on Air Force Two while Joe Biden was vice president.”

On Wednesday, Comer demanded that the National Archives and Records Administration turn over records about Hunter Biden’s access to Air Force Two during his father’s vice presidency.
Already, some Republicans like Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-Col.) and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) have introduced articles of impeachment against the president.
“The credible thing is whether we’re doing an impeachment inquiry, give us the documents we’re asking for,” McCarthy told Fox Business earlier this month. “The whole determination here is how Biden handles this.”
Some Democrats have speculated that Kevin McCarthy is using the specter of an impeachment inquiry to distract from the wrangling over the government shutdown.AP
As McCarthy contemplated an impeachment inquiry, he was grappling with the specter of a government shutdown with both houses of Congress presenting a vision of a battle for the bipartisan 12-way appropriations bill to fund the government.
McCarthy has publicly supported a stopgap measure known as a continuing resolution to keep the government funded and avoid a shutdown, which has caught the attention of his conservatives.
If Congress fails to act before the next fiscal year, which begins in October, there will be a shutdown.
The House is currently in recess and is scheduled to return to session next month.
