‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ singer Oliver Anthony cancels show over high ticket prices: ‘Supposed to be affordable’

Singer Oliver Anthony, 31, canceled his concert in Tennessee when the venue charged $99 for a ticket and almost double that for a meet and greet, pleading with fans not to spend the high price tag.

Anthony, the Virginia artist behind the viral song “Rich Men North of Richmond,” was scheduled to perform at Knoxville’s “Cotton Eyed Joe” bar before he and the venue couldn’t agree on a price.

The venue charges $99 for a standard ticket and around $200 for a package that includes a chance to meet the singer, according to WVLT.

The country singer lashed out in several Facebook posts that she wants her show to be an affordable, low-cost experience, calling meet-and-greet fees “horse—t” and “should be free.”

“I apologize for the prices at Cotton Eyed Joe,” Anthony said Tuesday. “A friend of mine tried to help me book a show. I told him I didn’t want to do anything over $40 a piece, ideally not over $25 a piece. This should be an affordable plan. Please don’t pay $90 for a ticket.”

“Finally, it’s my fault for not being directly involved with the venue that contacted me. My plate is full and I leave the responsibility to others to help me order,” explained Anthony in a separate post.

Anthony chooses his tickets for fans cost as low as $25 to a maximum of $40.

Anthony admitted that a friend had booked the show and not him, most likely causing a miscommunication with ticket prices along with other charges.

The singer also posted a video to Instagram about the conundrum, saying that when she found out about the ticket price, she was “disappointed.”

In a Facebook post, Cotton Eyed Joe claimed Anthony charged them $120,000 to perform for just one hour.

Anthony, however, denied the claims, saying the most he ever made on one show was $35,000.

The $120,000 charge also includes production, security, staff, hotel rooms and catering, according to the Daily Mail.

Cotton Eyed Joe’s owner applauded the 31-year-old country singer, saying ticket prices were not discussed during negotiations for the show.

“We talked about the price. I sent him the contract. Everything was cut in stone, black and white and when we sold tickets, we were at 500 tickets that we had sold in about four hours,” Chuck Ward, the owner, told WATE.

“We have negotiated the price, and nothing has ever been said about the price to sell the ticket. Nothing was ever said about charging for meet and greets,” added the owner.

Finally, in a turn of events, Anthony admits he may be at fault for the ticket price ruckus and accepts it on a call with Cotton Eyed Joe.

Anthony said he was upset with the nearly $200 cost for the meet and greet, claiming the venue “made us play there just so they could make extra money off you.”

“My reservation guy handled all of this over the phone with them. And I realize there are two sides to every story,” she typed in the post.

“Since then, I wish them the best. All the blame is ultimately on me. I should be more thoroughly involved in the booking, and I should probably consider using a professional consultant in this area,” he concluded the note to his fans.

The event has been rescheduled and will instead take place at the Knoxville Convention Center on September 29, according to the singer’s website.
