Controversy

In September 2022, after Richa Meena’s Gujarati film Chhello Show (The Last Film Show) was nominated for the 2023 Oscars, it was claimed that the film was a copy of the iconic Italian film Cinema Paradiso (1988). The film, according to FWICE, was originally made by French business Orange Studios, which has its headquarters in France. Also, according to FWICE, the film is a replica of the 1988 Oscar-winning Italian film Cinema Paradiso. According to the 2023 Oscar eligibility criteria, the film should be selected from a list of films released in 2022; however, Chhello Plans released in 2021 are not eligible to be selected this year. Later, in a media interview, the president of FWICE, BN Tiwari, spoke about Gujarati films and said,

This year’s nomination of the film ‘Chhello Show’ as India’s Official Entry to the 95th Oscar Awards did not follow the usual norms and therefore raised many doubts and issues that we thought of raising. We strongly feel that the selection process was not followed carefully. We have nothing personal against the producers and filmmakers who have been nominated for Oscars, but at the same time, the true successors of this award cannot be left in a dilemma because it is very wrong and inappropriate for us.”
