‘Riverdale’ Star Camila Mendes Opens Up About Body Image Struggles

Camila Mendes rose to fame for her role as the iconic Veronica Lodge on the CW show, “Riverdale.” The actress has since starred in films such as “Do Revenge,” “The Perfect Date,” and “Dangerous Lies.”

But during the first season of “Riverdale,” the 28-year-old admitted to struggling with an eating disorder.

Camila Mendes recently went on the Going Mental podcast where she revealed her ongoing struggle with body image issues.

The 28-year-old says she’s dealt with body image issues since childhood, but after the first season of “Riverdale” debuted, her struggles really took over, leading to an eating disorder.

“I would watch every episode and say, ‘Oh my God, my stomach is there…’ ” he told host Eileen Kelly about watching the first back season of “Riverdale.” “I was, like, very insecure, and it really triggered my eating disorder.”

“When you’re in your early 20s, like, your body fluctuates…my body hasn’t settled into itself yet,” she continued. “I looked at myself, isolating myself. My stomach, you know, my arms, my chin, anything – I would obsess.”

Mendes said that the struggles he faced took over and interfered with his work. “It kind of interferes with my acting because when I’m acting on camera … it really f—s with your process,” he added.

Mendes Turns To A Nutritionist For Help

The 28-year-old said she eventually sought help from a nutritionist to help her overcome her fear of food, particularly carbohydrates.

“I was really afraid of eating carbs,” she continued, “and what would happen is I would avoid them for a long time, and then I would eat a lot and then purge them. So it was this, like, terrible cycle. He helped me overcome it by reintroducing bread into my life to be like, ‘Look, it’s not going to kill you.’ “

After seven seasons, “Riverdale” is coming to an end.

“Everybody’s always like, yeah, ‘Free the cast of Riverdale’ or whatever, but I think in the end, we’re all going to be sad when it ends,” Camila Mendes said of the end of the beloved show.

“Any kind of creative artist looks for new challenges, and there comes a time when something is no longer challenging. I think everyone is just ready for the next chapter. It’s like we tackled the show in a different way,” Mendes continued.

“Riverdale” has aired on the CW since 2017. The show is based on the Archie Comics series and stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, and Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy.

The seventh and final season of “Riverdale” is expected to air in 2023 on the CW. Seasons one through six are currently streaming on Netflix.
