While all “Harry Potter” fans know that Robbie Coltrane played Hagrid in the film series, perhaps only Ravenclaws know that Coltrane was actually born Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen, Scotland in 1950.

The “Tutti Frutti” performer took the stage name Coltrane in the early 20s as a tribute to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. He then made his big debut in Byrne’s theater production of “The Slab Boys.”

Although he starred in two “James Bond” films, it was his debut as the larger-than-life giant in 2001’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” that brought him the most recognition.

I have fond memories of him keeping our spirits up for Prisoner of Azkaban, when we all hid from the pouring rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he told stories and jokes to keep our spirits up. I feel very lucky to have met and worked with him and very sad that he has passed away. He is an amazing actor and a beautiful man.”
