Ron DeSantis calls Trump indictments biggest regret of the campaign: ‘Distorted the primary’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis opened up Thursday about the one thing he wishes he could change about the 2024 campaign: Donald Trump’s legal troubles.

DeSantis tore apart the four allegations against the 77-year-old as unfair and lamented that they had “upended” the GOP primary process — while also warning that they could spell disaster for Trump in the general election.

“I hope Trump is not prosecuted for any of this,” DeSantis told Christian Broadcasting Network host David Brody.

“From [Manhattan DA] Alvin Bragg, I have criticized the cases … that pervert justice, which is bad, but I also think it distorts the bottom line.”

The 45-year-old noted that the allegations fueled Trump’s support among Republican voters and prevented his rival from gaining traction in the race.

“It also just crowded out a lot of other stuff, and it sucked up a lot of oxygen,” DeSantis said.

Bragg obtained the first indictment against Trump in late March, charging him with 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

At the time, polls showed DeSantis saw Trump in the race for the Republican nomination.

But since the time of the first claims, Trump’s lead has ballooned to a current 52.2-point spread in the RealClearPolitics average.

In all, Trump faces 91 criminal charges in two federal cases, a state case outside of Georgia and a Manhattan case.

“I think the Democrats have a plan on this,” DeSantis told Brody. “I think the media has a plan on this. And I think if it gets to the point where six months from now, Trump is the presumptive nominee and he has to go through all of this, they have a plan for how they’re going to get through it.”

On Wednesday, Sunshine State Republicans criticized the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to remove the 45th president from the primary ballot, echoing similar concerns.

“They did all these things basically to strengthen grassroots support for him, to bring him to the generals,” he said at the campaign stop in Iowa. “And the whole general election is going to be all these legal things.”

DeSantis has campaigned aggressively in Iowa, seeking to build momentum against Trump ahead of the Jan. 15 caucuses.

The Florida governor has secured coveted endorsements from Governor Kim Reynolds and evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats.

However, the RCP average shows Trump leading DeSantis by 32.7 percentage points.

“Trump certainly has certain segments that are very strong,” he explained. “A lot of these people, though, who show up in this poll, a lot of them are soft. I mean, they remember him, they like his policies, but they’re willing to vote for someone else.”

Throughout the campaign, DeSantis has tried to drive home the message that Trump has failed to deliver on his promises and will likely lose the general election.

“Clearly, Trump can win the primary,” he told CBN. “I’m not convinced he can win the general.”

“Ron DeSanctus has a lot of things he wishes he could change, from hiring Jeff Roe to run his super PAC, wearing awkward elevators in his shoes, to announcing his campaign on Spaces that was exposed from the start, to hiring his personal cronies with no presidential experience,” the spokesperson said. Trump Steven Cheung to The Post in response.

“But most of all, he probably wishes he wasn’t running in the first place so he wouldn’t have to embarrass himself on the campaign trail every day.”
