Actress Rosario Dawson talks about how long she sat in the makeup chair for her role as Ahsoka Tano… and it’s a lot!
When he first appeared in live action, it took the actor over three hours to look like a Jedi Padawan. However, after appearing in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” the process has now become more streamlined.
In fact, it takes just ninety minutes each day to prepare the actress for her role in the new live-action Disney+ series “Ahsoka.”

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Rosario Dawson admitted that it used to take a lot of time to prepare her outfit, striped ponytail (known as a lekku), and orange peel. Dawson said that the makeup department was “very proud” of their ability to cut her time from three hours in the chair to only about ninety minutes.
“We set our own time every day. Depending on how much skin is visible, sometimes it will go up to two hours,” he continued. “And that’s tough: We’ll go in at 4 a.m. every day so we can be ready when the crew is there at 6. We’ll have a full day, and then it will still take at least half an hour to get it all off.”

There’s also the complication of different face paint colors, as some look better in natural sunlight than the bright light of Volume, which is the new LED technology used to project realistic backgrounds on set. “It’s like, ‘Okay, I look really good in the light, but I’m neon now,'” she said.
He also revealed that his live-action costume has undergone some changes since he first appeared in “The Mandalorian.” He said that his mane was longer, referring to the horn-like appendages on the tail of his head. “Everything is 3D printed, and it moves in a different way. It’s lighter,” he explained. “The technology really didn’t exist when we first cast Mando, so it’s really interesting to see how it continues to evolve.”
‘Ahsoka’ Inspired By Gandalf From ‘Lord Of The Rings’

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly that also took place before the SAG-AFTRA strike, he revealed that creator Dave Filoni drew parallels with Gandalf’s journey from Gandalf the Gray to Gandalf the White in JRR Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” with ” Ahsoka’s character.
“In the animation, you see him go to white, but what I like is the idea that there’s another level to him,” Dawson explains. “Dave and I talked a lot about Gandalf the Gray and Gandalf the White — talking about that transition and how he’s very capable and brilliant and highly regarded as a leader, but he still has a level of development to go through.”
“The pressure for more, the desire for more, the challenge that he pushes himself against is okay – and it’s actually extraordinary and important,” he continued. “That’s one of the reasons I’ve been drawn to him all this time, the fact that even with his brilliance, he keeps pushing himself further.”

Ahsoka Tano first appeared in the animated series “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels.” Dawson admits that the character has changed a lot since then. “He seems very alone, and we felt that coming from Rebels, where he’s working with all these different people, but he’s really alone in a lot of ways,” Dawson added. “What I really like about this [show] is that we can perfect it a little more.”
He continued, “We can see how he is in this position and the path he chooses as a kind of ronin, just this warrior himself. And I really like that we get to rekindle some of the relationships that he has from his past.”
The first few episodes of “Ahsoka” are now available to stream on Disney+.
