A specialist sex crime squad set up after UK entertainer Jimmy Savile was found to have abused hundreds of people is helping to investigate damning allegations against Russell Brand, it emerged on Thursday.
Operation Hydrant was set up in 2014 amid the scandal over beloved BBC star Savile, who died in 2011 aged 84, for raping and molesting children and vulnerable adults for more than 50 years.
The focus is on “non-recent” sexual offenses – especially any that might involve “famous people.”
That now includes looking into allegations of rape and sexual assault made against Brand, 48, a spokesperson confirmed to the Times of London, the UK newspaper that first detailed the accusers’ allegations.
“We are working with [London’s] The Metropolitan Police to support their response to the recent allegations,” a spokesperson told UK newspaper Brand, which has faced further accusations since its first four appearances.
The operation “will urge any victim or survivor who feels ready to report any alleged sexual assault to come forward and speak to officers.

“The Hydrant Program does not comment on the status of … individual investigations,” the spokeswoman said, adding that it was “a matter for the team.”
The UK Times, along with a Channel 4 documentary crew, at the weekend detailed allegations from four women – including a then 16-year-old girl who said she called him a “child” – of assaults between 2006 and 2013.
Since the massive allegations have rocked the UK, another woman has come forward to Scotland Yard to report she was sexually assaulted by Brand in central London’s hip Soho area in 2003.

Brand, who has reinvented himself as an online commentator and podcaster, has been open about being a prolific cheater, but insists they all “really always agree”.
Savile used his iconic celebrity status to attack patients in hospital beds, teenagers famous from viewers of his TV show, and even a teenage girl visiting a cancer hospice, police said in 2013.
The report lists 214 criminal offenses by Savile, including 34 rapes – 28 of children – but many more have been alleged. The attack began in 1955 and lasted until 2009.

The Times highlighted an on-air call Brand made to Savile in May 2007 — five years before the latter’s crimes came to light — purporting to offer to bring him a girl.
