The Western film “Rust” finally resumed production this week at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana.
The film has halted production following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021 at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico. Production resumed on the same day that the state of New Mexico officially dropped involuntary manslaughter charges against actor Alec Baldwin.

Actor Alec Baldwin is back to continue filming his scenes for the Western. While most of the cast and crew will return, the production is adding some new faces to protect the cast and crew. Deadline reports that new crew members include Security Officers Gary Jensen and Paul Jordan (Tenet Production Security), EP/LP Stephen Marinaccio (Jack Ryan), and Production Designer Christine Brandt (Card Counter).
Director Joel Souza will return to direct the film as well. Souza had been standing right behind Hutchins and was hospitalized as a result of the incident. In a statement, Souza said, “As bittersweet as it is, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team is joining the former cast and crew to complete what Halyna and I started.”
“My every effort in this film will be focused on honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. The beauty of Montana is beyond words, and the hospitality and kindness extended by everyone I have met has been humbling and inspiring,” he continued. “It is a privilege to work with such a great partner as we see this on Halyna’s behalf.”
Production Expected to Wrap Up in Late May

Melina Spadone, attorney for Rust Movie Productions, said in a press release today that she expects production to wrap up by the end of May. “The production will continue to use union crews and will prevent any use of working weapons and any form of ammunition. Live ammunition is — and always has been — prohibited on set,” he said. “Each of us is dedicated wholeheartedly to realizing Halyna’s vision and honoring her art.”
Souza directed a script he wrote himself based on a story he produced in collaboration with Baldwin. The synopsis reads: “A 13-year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, is taken on a violent and harrowing journey to old Mexico by his long-estranged grandfather. he was sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a local rancher.”
The role of Lucas Hollister is currently played by Patrick Scott McDermott of “Chicago Med” and “South Side” fame. Actors Jensen Ackles, Travis Fimmel, and Frances Fisher are also expected to reprise their roles. All of the original producers are expected to return to the film, as well as stunt coordinator Allan Graf, costume designer Terese Davis, and make-up department head Stacy Lockhart.

Cinematographer Bianca Cline of the critically acclaimed “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” will complete the work started by Halyna Hutchins. Cline will reportedly donate his salary to charity.
Matthew Hutchins, Halyna’s husband, reportedly gave Cline his “blessing and support” to pursue the position. Matthew will also serve as an executive producer on the film, as part of a wrongful death lawsuit that was settled last October.

In a statement at the time, Matthew Hutchins said, “We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, of our wrongful death lawsuit against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our will be rejected.”
“Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume filming with all the original principal players in January 2023,” he continued. At the time, they were scouting locations in California, before production was later moved to Montana and put on hold while they finalized the final details.
“I’m not interested in getting involved in accusations or accusations of blame (on the publisher or Mr. Baldwin),” Hutchins added. “We all believe that Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work.”

However, the civil suit filed by Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey, his father Anatolii Androsovych, and sister Svetlana Zemko, continued. Attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing the family, said her client “remains hopeful” despite the dismissed charges.
“Mr. Baldwin could pretend that he wasn’t responsible for pulling the trigger and firing the live bullet that ended Halyna’s life,” he said in a statement. “He could have run off to Montana and pretended that he was just an actor in a wild west movie but , in real life, he can’t escape the fact that he has a major role in a tragedy that has real-life consequences.”
