‘Rust’ To Resume Filming This Spring With Alec Baldwin

Actor Alec Baldwin and “Rust” costar Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

First responder David Halls pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent use of a weapon and is now expected to be called as a witness.

Although the first hearing for all three parties is scheduled for the end of this month, the producers of “Rust” are going ahead with their plans to resume filming.

On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter was the first to share the news that the Western is expected to resume production this spring with “a mix of new and old crew members.” Star and producer Alec Baldwin is expected to return to his role, despite criminal charges against him.

The late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins will be replaced by Bianca Cline, who has worked on “American Horror Story” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.” Melina Spadone, an attorney for Rust Movie Productions, told THR that the scene where Halyna Hutchins is shot was rewritten.

According to Rust Movie Productions, Cline will donate his salary to charity and has the “blessing and support” of Matthew Hutchins.

The film originally planned to start shooting again in January 2023, changing locations from New Mexico to California. It is not known whether difficulty in obtaining a location or whether criminal charges were the cause of the delay.

News that “Rust” was slated to resume filming was first announced last year. Halyna’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the producers, including Alec Baldwin, in February 2022. By October, a settlement was reached, which involved Matt being named the film’s executive producer.

In addition to Hutchins, Grant Hill and Stephen Marinaccio will also now serve as producers on the film, according to Spadone. The film set also welcomed two new crew members, including safety officers Gary Jensen and Paul Jordan of Tenet Production Safety and production designer Christine Brandt.

The new film set will reportedly feature “enhanced on-set security protocols, including security supervisors and a ban on any working weapons or ammunition.” Live ammunition has been banned from film sets.

Actor Jensen Ackles, best known for his role in the hit CW series “Supernatural” is expected to resume filming. Travis Fimmel and Frances Fisher are also expected to reprise their roles when filming resumes production.

Spadone told THR that Alec Baldwin still has scenes to shoot, but did not elaborate on how the criminal charges against him might affect production. Spadone said that all of Rust’s original producers are also expected to return.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed May Not Return To ‘Rust’ Set As Shield

“As bittersweet as it is, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team joined the former cast and crew committed to completing what Halyna and I started,” Souza said in a statement. “My every effort in this film will be focused on honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It was a privilege to see this on his behalf.”

At this time, it is unclear whether Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will return as the film’s shield and prop master. Since the film no longer uses working weapons, the ammo supplier is no longer needed.

Spadone wanted to clarify that the production had been cleared by all Hollywood unions and associations, allowing members to work on the film. Spadone also said that additional crew members will be hired as the main photography approach.
