Safoora Zargar was born in 1993 (age 30; in 2023) in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. He grew up in Delhi and NCR. Safoora did most of her schooling in Faridabad. After graduating with a BA from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University, Safoora went to Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi) where she got an MA in sociology. In 2019, he enrolled in an MPhil in sociology at Jamia Millia Islamia.

Anti-CAA Protests

While pursuing his MPhil at Jamia Millia Islamia, Safoora became a member of the media wing of Jamia’s Coordinating Committee, a wing allegedly described as one of the main agencies behind the anti-CAA protests in the country. Safoora extensively campaigned against the Citizenship Amendment Act across Delhi and NCR. He led many anti-CAA protests in the region. During a protest on February 10, 2020, he fainted in a scuffle between police and students.

Controversy

On 10 April 2020, Delhi Police arrested Safoora Zargar at her residence in Delhi in connection with FIR 48/2020 filed in the Jaffrabad roadblock case. The Delhi Police accused him of being the main “conspirator” in the violence that broke out in northeast Delhi at the Jafrabad Metro station on 22–23 February 2020. In the violence, at least 53 people were killed, mostly Muslims.

After being produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate on 11 April 2020, Safoora was remanded in police custody for two days. Although he was granted bail on 13 April 2020, he was immediately re-arrested on the same day in a different case in connection with FIR 59/2020, and on 20 April 2020, several more charges were framed against him by the Delhi Police.

Safoora Zargar was also charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Reportedly, Zargar has been charged with as many as 18 crimes, including rioting, possession of weapons, attempted murder, inciting violence, inciting, killing, and promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds. Since April 15, 2020, Safoora has been lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Reportedly, she was held in solitary confinement at the prison for almost two weeks to protect her and her unborn baby from COVID-19. On 4 June 2020, Delhi’s Patiala House Court denied bail to Safoora Zargar for her alleged role in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. While dismissing his bail petition, Justice Dharmendra Rana said,

On 24 June 2020, he was released on bail from the Delhi High Court. Safoora had sought bail on the grounds of her pregnancy and severe medical problems. A Delhi trial court acquitted 11 accused in the 2019 Jamia terror case on February 4, 2023, including Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha, and six others. Following the trial court’s decision, the Delhi police challenged it in the high court, and on March 28, 2023, the Delhi High Court set aside the acquittal of Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha, and six others. The prosecution alleged that the accused participated in the riots, raised slogans of “murdabad Delhi police,” and knowingly participated in the unlawful assembly. This view was supported by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, who passed judgment against the accused.

Pregnancy Trolls & Social Media

Reportedly, when she was arrested, Safoora was three months pregnant. As soon as reports of her pregnancy came out, social media was flooded with trolls who criticized her pregnancy before marriage. Many people started doing character assassination of her on social media by sharing her unrelated photos and videos. In one video of the couple having sex, people claimed that Safoora was in the video; however, it was later discovered that it was not Safoora in the video but PornHub model Selena Banks.
