Sam Neill Reflects On Friendship With Robin Williams Ahead Of 9th Death Anniversary

Sam Neill has spoken candidly about his friendship with legendary Hollywood star, the late Robin Williams. Beloved by all, Williams starred in several memorable comedy films that helped etch his name in the hearts of millions around the world.

However, tragedy struck when she died by suicide in August 2014, and her fans later learned that her colorful off-screen life was full of depression and turmoil. The actor, who was 63 at the time, was later said to have Lewy body dementia, which causes a progressive decline in the carrier’s mental abilities.

Sam Neill Reveals Intimate Details About Robin Williams’ Depression In New Book

For fans who watch Williams movies religiously, they have glimpses of her happiness through movies like “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Jumanji” and “World’s Greatest Dad” to keep his memory untainted. The case is different for Hollywood stars like Neill, who developed a lasting friendship with the late actor.

For Neill, who co-starred “Patch Adam” in “Bicentennial Man,” there was something “sad” about his friend’s life. Detailing their relationship in her newly published memoir, “Have I Ever Told You This?” the 75-year-old actor recalled having “great chats” during their visits to each other’s trailers during filming.

Per PEOPLEthe New Zealand star explained that they talked “about this and that” and their upcoming project, adding that his late friend was “very funny, outrageous, unbearable, very funny.”

While the “In the Mouth of Madness” actress credits Williams for being the “funniest person” she’s ever worked with, she found that the California native is also the “saddest person” she’s ever worked with.

“He has fame; he’s rich, people love him, great kids—the world is his oyster. But I felt more pity for him than I could express. He is the loneliest man on a lonely planet,” the father of two emphasized.

Neill recalls his castmates appearing “reclusively and very depressed” at different times. The “Peaky Blinders” alum added that while he had a “sense” of a “dark room inside,” during his conversation with Williams, a switch would be turned on for him as soon as he “opened the door.” In the words of the “Event Horizon” star:

“Funny stuff just came out of it. And everybody was stitched up, and when everybody was stitched up, you could see Robin was happy.

Though to be honest, this isn’t the first time an insider has opened up about Williams’ mental health struggles. In 2020, his son, Zak, spoke about the challenges of the “Good Will Hunting” cast during an appearance on “The Dr. Oz Show.”

The 39-year-old revealed that he was “very aware” of his father’s struggle with depression as it sometimes “manifested in addiction,” which resulted in him [Robin] take steps to “support his well-being and mental health, especially when he is challenged.”

His half-sister Zelda follows with a quote from Japanese writer Haruki Murakami that explains one’s inability to remember how they made it through the storm when it’s over.

“You never know for sure if the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you will not be the same person that came in,” the rest of the quote read.

One fan called Robin a “treasure” who “truly made the world a better place when she was here,” and a second remembered her as an “amazing” person who was “rich with talent and a lot of goodness.”

Professional wrestler Marc Mero uploaded a collage of images, with one showing him holding a signed and framed photo of the “What Dreams May Come True” cast. The former amateur boxer praised Robin as a “beautiful soul” and “a great and talented comedic actor whose death brought attention to “dementia, anxiety, and depression.”
