Multi-Grammy award-winning artist Sam Smith has revealed that they were “spit on” after announcing their non-binary status. The artists, known for their soulful songs, came out as non-binary in 2019 after what they described as a “lifelong battle” with their gender identity.
The announcement of the “Stay With Me” singer did not cause much public reaction. In the months that followed, Smith revealed that while they acknowledged that coming out as “they/them” was a positive step toward accepting themselves, it had been a struggle because of the sheer number of people who weren’t supportive.
Reflecting on that period recently, Smith revealed that strangers “spit on” them in the street following their revelations.

Sam Smith ‘Spit On’ In The Streets Of England

Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on Thursday, Smith revealed that while there’s no issue with their new gender identity in their private lives, it’s another matter in public. They revealed that they had been harassed and “spit on” on the streets of England.
“I think all the negativity in the struggle is in my public life and my work. And the amount of hate and hate that came my way was exhausting,” they said.
“It’s in the damn news,” Smith continued. “Someone spat on me on the street. It doesn’t make sense. What I find difficult about it is, if that happens to me and I’m famous, I’m a pop star, can you imagine what other kids, like queer kids, feel?”
Sam Smith Says They’re More Expressive In The US
Smith revealed that since coming out, their relationship with their family is much better, and they are able to communicate with them smoothly. The artist also spoke about their love life, revealing they feel “loved” and “comfortable in my skin.”
They continued, “Since changing my pronouns, it’s been like coming home. I wish I knew what those words were when I was in school because I would recognize them in school. Because that’s who I am, and that’s who I’ve been.”
Smith also admitted that they feel like the US allows them to dress and express themselves better than in England. They recalled a trip to the White House last month where “the gay and queer crowd” turned out for President Biden’s signing of the Marriage Act.
“It’s a wild feeling,” they said. “Having Biden stand up and say all these things. Speaking of trans people and how he sees them, he sees us; I have never heard that in my own country from politicians.”
They’re Tired of Trying to Insert Themselves

Earlier this month, Smith sat down with Rolling stones and talk about their early days in the music industry. According to the artist, they have tried to fit in with others, but as time went by, the effort proved to be too much. The Smiths’ debut album, “In the Lonely Hour,” was released in 2014, and they have since released three more.
The artist said, “The time when people knew me — from In the Lonely Hour , at the age of 22 — was the time where I didn’t want to dress up too much; it’s a time when I want to rest and adjust.” Smith eventually got tired of trying so hard and wanted to “go back to how I was when I was young.”

During the interview, the “Writings On The Wall” singer also said that they initially had trouble trying to express their joy and sex through their music. “I run into this world, and it’s not the world I thought it would be. I’m afraid to express certain things… my sex in music, my happiness in music,” they said.
The artist continued, “The themes are sometimes very personal, and I feel more comfortable showing another side of me; I didn’t feel pressured, but I definitely felt like I had to go out, definitely, towards the end.”
Sam Smith’s ‘Gloria’ Album Has 13 Songs

Smith’s fourth studio album, “Gloria,” has 13 tracks and was produced by Capitol Records. It’s Smith’s first since their 2020 album “Love Goes.” The album was reportedly named “Gloria” because of the number of female features on the tracks. These include Jessie Rayes, Koffee, and Kim Petras. Smith also has a song with Ed Sheeran.
Prior to the launch, the artist and Petra made history as the first non-binary and transgender artists to remain at the top of the charts with their song “Unholy.” The song was released in late 2022 as the album’s prelude and became massively popular on social media.
“Unholy” also earned the artist and Petras a Grammy nomination for best pop duo/group performance. According to reports, the song will be nominated for record and song of the year; however, it was released too late. Popular music platform “Unholy” has just eight days left until the eligibility period ends, September 30, 2022, making it too late for Grammy voters to fully register.
