San Francisco ‘Leaning Tower’ residents forced to pay $6.8M for failed fix

Residents of the Millennium Tower, better known as San Francisco’s Leaning Tower, are left with a $6.8 million bill after a much-needed renovation project failed to fix the luxury building’s troubled 29-inch tilt and caused a severe sewage spill.

Repairs to correct the tower’s notorious 29-inch tilt ended with residents being billed $10 per square foot of condominium space — costing tenants $6.8 million in total — as the project cost $20 million more than the expected $100 million, NBC Bay Area reported.

The 545-foot-tall tower continued to tilt and sink further to the west after architects attempted to repair its foundation last fall. Although the issue has not been resolved, residents have been told they have until October to pay for the so-called repairs.

“I don’t know what to do with this place, because it’s expensive – I can’t live in it,” said Mehrdad Mostafavi, who moved in June after sewage started flowing out of his kitchen sink.

While scrambling to clear sewage backups, which Millennium repair engineers warned could occur due to the tower’s tilt, Mostafavi was slapped with a nearly $14,000 bill from the Tower’s owners association.

“It’s a luxury building and a famous building, but unfortunately it’s not like this for me as the owner,” Mostafavi told the outlet. “I’m really suffering.”

Mostafavi said the bill came after he had already dipped into his retirement savings account to pay for his damaged kitchen.

“I’m really having a hard time seeing how I can go about retiring – how to get out of this apartment and do my retirement,” he said. “It is very expensive…. they keep asking for more money and this is unacceptable for me.”

After homeowners were compensated for lost property value, the tower association was given $150 million to cover costs – but it was still not enough given the troubled project’s many hurdles, the association said.

“Delays and increasing city requirements resulted in unexpected project cost increases,” the association’s letter to residents said.

The perceived bill shared a rough accounting for the $6.8 million owed by residents — and tried to reassure homeowners they weren’t alone in having to pay, as the tower developer and repair contractor paid $10 million to offset the excess.

According to recent monitoring data, since construction wrapped up in June, the building’s tilt has only improved fractionally.

The 29-inch tilt was first revealed to residents of the luxury building in 2016.
