The Duchess of York has been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer that starts in melanocytes. This was discovered when she underwent reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy to address her previous breast cancer issues.

“Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York, has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma,” Ferguson’s representative told the publication.

The rep added, “Her dermatologist had several moles removed and analyzed at the same time as the Duchess underwent reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy, and one of them was identified as cancerous.”

According to research, about 25% of melanomas originate from moles, and Ferguson’s condition falls into this category. Although the exact cause of all melanomas remains unclear, factors such as exposure to ultraviolet light and genetic influences are thought to be contributing factors.

As for the next steps to be taken, the duchess’ representative revealed that her team of doctors will carry out “further investigations” for a diagnosis.

This will help determine whether melanoma is “caught at an early stage,” as the likelihood of the disease being successfully treated is high.

Meanwhile, although Ferguson was “devastated” by the news, he remained “in high spirits” as he recovered at the MAYRLIFE clinic in Austria. He also appreciates his doctor and wants his experience to be a lesson to others.

“The Duchess would like to thank the entire medical team [who] have supported him, especially his dermatologist, whose vigilance ensured that the disease was detected when it occurred,” Ferguson’s representative told the publication.

“He believes his experience underscores the importance of checking for size, shape, color, and texture, and the appearance of new moles that can be signs of melanoma.”

She once talked about it during an episode of her podcast, “Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah,” which she co-hosts with entrepreneur Sarah Thomson.

“It’s very important that I talk about it,” Fergie told listeners of her podcast at the time, per US Weekly. “I’m telling people out there because I want everyone who listens to this podcast to get tested. Go get tested and do it.”
