Scarlett Johansson Recalls ‘Weird’ Reunion With ‘Lost In Translation’ Costar Bill Murray

Scarlett Johansson recently shared, in an interview, that she once randomly ran into Bill Murray in an empty bar. The actress explained that the meeting was “like a dream” and said they just “talked the whole time.”

Johansson and Murray played opposite roles in “Lost in Translation,” a 2003 romantic comedy-drama. During the interview, Johansson also talked about the lessons her husband Colin Jost taught her. He talks about “understanding the basics” that a person needs from a partner.

Scarlett Johannson recently opened up to Gwyneth Paltrow on a new episode of her “Goop” podcast. During their conversation, Johansson recalled a surprise meeting with former costar Bill Murray.

He said, per People magazine, “I haven’t seen him for a decade or more. It is a long time. And then I went into a bar with my ex-boyfriend from a long time ago … and there was only one person in the bar, and that was Bill Murray. “It’s very strange. I walked in and saw him sitting there – no one else was there – and I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ I had to walk out. I was like, ‘It’s Bill! I haven’t seen him in a while.’”

Johansson explained that Murray was surprised to see it, especially since it had been so long. He said the meeting was “like a dream,” They specifically “talked the whole time.”

He Remembered His Experience Shooting With Him

He said, “I think it was hard for him too, because he had a lot going on with his family and his marriage. And it was like he didn’t know what we were doing in Tokyo for those few weeks.”

Johansson and Murray played opposites in the 2003 feature film by Sofia Coppola. The romantic comedy follows Bob (played by Murray) as he vacations in Tokyo to promote a brand while suffering a midlife crisis. In Tokyo, he meets college graduate Charlotte, and as a duo, they consider their future together and apart.

During Johansson’s interview with Paltrow, she also talked about the lessons she learned from her husband, Colin Jost. The “Black Widow” star said she realized she didn’t know what she “wanted or needed from other people.”

Johansson says, “I never realized, ‘Oh, it’s important to me; I need to be with a loving person. That’s a basic feature to have.’ And I think understanding the basics you need in a partner is a must — for longevity, anyway.”

Johansson says identifying her basics for a partner was a “game changer” for her relationship. She and Jost, an actor and writer with SNL, married in 2020 and have a son, Cosmo. Johansson also has a daughter, Rose, with ex-partner Romain Dauriac.

In April 2022, Murray was accused by a co-worker of sexual misconduct during the filming of “Being Mortal.” At that time, he had an interview with CNBCsaying he and the accuser (a woman) just had a “difference of opinion.”

The “What About Bob” star was later accused by actress Lucy Liu of misconduct on the set of “Charlie’s Angels.” During the interview at Los Angeles Times’ Asian Enough podcast, Liu recalled that Murray had yelled at him on the set of the film.

He said, per Many people, “Some language is inexcusable and unacceptable, and I’m not going to just sit there and take it. So, I stood up for myself and have no regrets. Because no matter how low your totem pole is or where you come from, there is no need to put yourself down or put others down. And I will not give up, nor will I stop.
