Scarlett Johansson Talks Being ‘Groomed’ & ‘Typecast’ As Young Actress

Scarlett Johansson spilled some dirt about her former management team.

The Danish beauty, who dreamed of becoming an actress after an off-Broadway play, achieved her goal when she made her debut in the 1994 fantasy comedy “North” and gained early recognition for her performances in “Manny & Lo” and “The Horse Whisperer.”

She eventually moved on to more adult roles appearing in “Lost in Translation,” which earned her a BAFTA Award for “Best Actress.” She continues to receive praise for her work as an actress— whether playing a temptress or a troubled teenager.

Johansson’s career in Hollywood has served her well, including a place on Time Magazine’s 2021 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Additionally, her films have grossed over $14.3 billion globally, making her the highest-grossing box office star of all time time.

In addition to this enviable performance, the actress’s appearance and physique make her easy to look at. Unfortunately, her beauty creates an uncomfortable work environment for the “Black Widow” star, who recently revealed that there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes.

Speaking to iHeartRadio’s “Table for Two” podcast host Bruce Bozzi, Johansson claimed that her old management team “groomed” her to accept a “bombshell” role at the start of her acting journey.

The Tony Award winner revealed how she began to see herself as a woman in her late teens. It was then that he began experimenting with his own “desire and sexuality” – a move that didn’t necessarily reduce his chances of being typecast. In his words:

“I think because of the trajectory that I’ve been on, I’m really caught up in this.”

She further explained, “I was groomed in a way to be what you call this bombshell type of actress. I was playing with other women and these objects of desire and, you know, I suddenly found myself trapped in this place, like, I can’t get out of it.”

The 38-year-old said he soon realized that accepting roles centered on his physical appearance wouldn’t last long, when he said, “I thought for the bomb type. [role] that burns bright and fast, and then you don’t have much of a chance other than that, and I just feel like I’m burning out so fast.”

Fortunately, a lot has changed for the actress who is now a mother of two. In fact, she told Boxzi how having children has influenced the types of acting projects she takes on, adding that it’s important to teach children “to pursue fulfilling work.”

The “Nanny Diaries” star previously discussed how “hypersexual” she is during an interview in October. According to The Blast, he stated that he became “objectified and pigeonholed” in a way that made him feel like he wasn’t being offered the kind of projects he wanted to do.

The process soon became desirable to him and instead gave him something to fight against. Johansson explained that while Hollywood has evolved since her acting career began, heavyweights still have a long way to go — especially in terms of how rising female talent is treated.

As we previously mentioned, Johansson is the mother of two children — she shares a daughter Rose Dorothy Dauriac, with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac, and a son Cosmo Jost with her current husband, Colin Jost.

She talked about how being a pregnant actress under the microscopic spotlight of the public can be damaging, reports The Blast. She also addresses her need to prioritize the safety of her unborn children while navigating the emotional and physical toll that comes with conception:

“I was very protective of both pregnancies, not wanting to feel scrutinized in the public eye. I want to be able to have my own feelings about my body changes without other people also telling me how they see me, whether it’s positive or negative.

When the “Summertime” singer was pregnant with her son last year, she realized how much pressure is placed on pregnant women. Things were so bad for Johansson that she had to endure scrutiny from strangers and loved ones.
