Scary moment Madrid commuters are caught in flooded metro

A group of commuters on a train in Madrid saw their train suddenly flooded as heavy rain lashed Spain from Sunday to Monday.

Shocking footage from inside a metro line shows riders backing away from train connecting doors as floodwater seeps through cracks.

Worried passengers can be seen filming the floods, with heavy rain visible through train windows, making it appear as if the train is stuck in a waterfall.

City officials said the flash floods began on Sunday, with Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida warning residents to brace themselves as 120 liters per square meter of rain was expected to fall in just 12 hours.

“Due to extraordinary and abnormal conditions, where rainfall records will be broken, I ask the people of Madrid to stay at home today,” Martinez-Almeida writes in Xformerly Twitter.

The mayor noted that the flood water far exceeded the city’s 1972 record of just 87 liters per square metre.

The rain has turned the bustling city of Madrid into a city of mud, where cars have been washed away by flash floods and commuter routes have been closed.

Spanish officials said at least three people died in flooding in the countryside of Toledo, about 31 miles southwest of Madrid.

Three others were reported missing, including a father and son whose car was swept into the Alberche River in Aldea del Fresno, and an 84-year-old man who was swept away by floodwaters in Villamanta.

The storm appeared far worse than 2019’s deadly downpour that killed two people in Southeast Spain, which saw the town of Ontinyent receive more than 15 inches of rain in just a few hours.

Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, issued a maximum red warning notice on Sunday for Toledo, Madrid and the city of Cadiz.

The agency said the storm that hit the country was a meteorological phenomenon known as DANA, the Spanish acronym for “isolated high-level depression,” which brought sudden heavy rain.
