Scooter Braun Expresses ‘Regret’ Over Buying Taylor Swift’s Masters

Scott Samuel Braun, better known as Scooter Braun, has been in hot water with Swifties since he acquired Taylor Swift’s catalog in 2019 when he bought Big Machine Records.

In a recent appearance on NPR’s podcast The Limits with Jay Williams, the controversial entertainment executive, 41, opened up about the acquisition, saying he learned “important lessons” from the purchase.

During his appearance on the NPR podcast, Scooter finally revealed his decision to buy music from a variety of artists, including Taylor Swift’s first six albums (via The Daily Mail). During the interview, Scooter said, “‘When I did the deal, I was under a very strict NDA with the guy who owned it, and I couldn’t tell any artist.”

He’s apparently referring to Big Machine Records owner Scott Borchetta, 60, who agreed to sell several artists’ catalogs to Scooter in 2019. Scooter claims that he’s “excited to work with every artist on the label,” but it seems that not every artist is eager to work with him.

“So when we finalized the deal, I started making phone calls to say, hey, I’m part of this,” Scooter recalled. “And before I could do that – I made four phone calls; I started making those phone calls – it all went to waste.”

The New York native said that his “regret” is that he “made the assumption that everybody, once the deal was done, would have a conversation with me, see my intentions, see my character and say, great, let’s go into business together. And I making that assumption with people I don’t know.”

He said that he had learned “that important lesson,” adding that he “can’t make that assumption anymore.”

“I can’t put myself in a place of, you know, arrogance to think that someone is just willing to talk and excited to work with me,” he added.

It’s worth noting that Scooter sold his company, Ithaca Holdings, and the music it acquired to South Korean Entertainment company HYBE for a billion dollars and a seat on HYBE’s board just two years after its initial acquisition. Scooter continues to manage artists such as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

Taylor Swift Calls Out Scooter For ‘Manipulative Bullying’ After Big Machine Record Acquisition

On June 30, 2019, the “Bad Blood” singer made her feelings about the sale known when she posted a lengthy Tumblr post accusing Scooter of “relentless manipulative bullying” that she claims has been going on “for years.”

“For years I asked, begged for the opportunity to own my work. Instead I was given the opportunity to re-sign to Big Machine Records and ‘get’ one album back at a time, one for each new album I submitted,” he wrote at the time. “I left because I knew as soon as I signed the contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thus selling me and my future. I had to make a painful choice to leave my past.”

“When I left my master in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that he would eventually sell him. Never in my worst nightmare did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter,” he continued. “Whenever Scott Borchetta hears the words ‘Scooter Braun’ come out of my mouth, it’s when I cry or try not to. He knew what he was doing; they both do. Controlling women who don’t want to be associated with them. Forever. That means forever.”

“Thankfully, I put my past in Scott’s hands and not my future,” he added. “And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in negotiations. You deserve to own the art you create.”

The “Shake It Off” singer has been on a mission to re-record her first six albums. In 2021, he released Fearless (Taylor Version) and followed it up with Red (Taylor Version) in November of that year. He has released several singles from 1989 (Taylor’s Version), although a full album has yet to be released.

Luckily for Swifties, she has a new album, “Midnights,” scheduled for release on October 21, 2022, via Republic Records. It will be his first studio album since his ninth studio album, “evermore” was released in December 2020.
