Sean Penn just left a part of himself in Ukraine, just like the girls of old who used to tie the hands of their chosen knights. Okay, so the comparison might be a bit much, but since Penn is back in Ukraine and giving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a bit of himself, with a positive message, it’s kind of fitting.
Penn has long shown strong support for Ukraine, to the point of being placed on a visitor ban list in Russia. And now, his gesture is sentimental, as well as inspiring.
Sean Penn Awarded with the Order of Ukraine
MEGA
This is the third visit of the American actor and film director Sean Penn to Ukraine in the middle of a full-scale war, and Zelenskyy once again uploaded a video clip of a conversation between the two.
In it, Penn can be heard saying, “There are three places in the world that will be the pride of my life. Where my daughter was born, where my son was born, and this.”
Earlier this year, Penn traveled to Ukraine since he was making a documentary, about the political tensions that turned into a major war while he was still in the country. Later, he details how he escaped to safety through Poland, on foot, along with many others.
Penn also said in an interview, that being in Ukraine made him think about taking up arms and fighting the good war, saying, “If you’ve ever been in Ukraine [fighting] should cross your mind. And you kind of think what century is this? Because I was at a gas station in Brentwood the other day and I’m now thinking of taking up arms against the Russians. What the f— is going on?”
Now, Zelenskyy honored him with the Order of Merit, writing in his post, “With great pleasure I present Sean Penn with the Order of Merit III degree. Thank you for your sincere support and important contribution to the popularization of Ukraine in the world!”

Sean Penn Gives Zelenskyy His Oscar As A Good Luck Charm
Penn also made his own gesture, this time giving Zelenskyy his Oscar statuette as a “symbol of faith”. In a video posted to Instagram, Penn can be seen handing Zelenskyy his Oscar during their meeting in the country’s capital, Kyiv. The 62-year-old actor told the 44-year-old politician, “It’s just a symbolic stupid thing, but if I know this is here with you, then I’ll feel better and strong enough for the fight. When you win, take it back to Malibu because I’ll feel better knowing there’s a part of me here.”
Considering that in his entire Hollywood career, Penn earned two Oscars for Best Actor in 2004, for “Mystic River” and another in 2009 for “Milk,” we’re not sure which of the two Penn handed Zelenskyy to keep.
In the caption, Zelenskyy wrote, “This time our meeting is special. Sean brought his Oscar statue as a symbol of faith in our country’s victory. It will be in Ukraine until the end of the war.”
Instagram Fans More Than Both
Fans couldn’t help but comment on the video, and there seemed to be an equal amount of dotage on both Penn and Zelenskyy.
Wrote one fan of Zelenskyy, “It’s good to watch Zelensky. No “them”, dress up, no script. The door opened. Enter, communicate, and touch the President of the country by the hand (in a friendly way while talking) Just look at the details. They shoot as they want, but not as strict as some emperors need… A completely open-minded person! He, Belarus, and Ukraine are unlucky with geographical neighbors. This is the only serious problem…”
Another is waiting for a movie by Penn, writing, “Sean Penn is filming a movie about Ukraine. It will be very interesting to watch this film because Sean is personally in Ukraine and witnessing history as it happens.”
As one IG user said, “Sean Penn was very generous to bring the Oscar statue to Ukraine – a wonderful honor.”
