Sean Penn is an iconic actor and director, there’s no doubt about it. “Mystic River”, “Into The Wild”, and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, there are too many iconic films surrounding this personality to cite them all. And recently, he decided to create a documentary about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this film, he wants to show the world the truth behind the Russian invasion and of course, he openly supports Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
However, Sean Penn wants President Zelensky to be invited to the Oscars and even promised to melt one of his Oscars if the president is not invited. Sean Penn Says Will Smith’s Slap Is “Disgraceful”
If you’ve seen the Oscars this year, or even if you just turn on your TV or watch the news on your phone sometimes, you probably know the scandal that surrounded Will Smith and his friend Chris Rock at the Ceremony. As a reminder, after a stupid joke from his friend Chris Rock, Will Smith stood up to go to the scene and proceeded to slap Chris Rock in the face. Although everyone at first thought that it was a joke or something written by the council, Will Smith began to shout loudly at his friend, and the audience understood that it was not a joke and a big deal.
This incident shocked the whole world, and rumors that Will Smith had been banned from the ceremony began to spread, while Will Smith apologized a few days later, knowing what he had done was inappropriate. In the end, the ceremony was more about that, than the winner himself, which is a shame for Sean Penn. What is even more embarrassing for him is the fact that Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to the Oscar Ceremony and more than that, this incident was highlighted while the President of Ukraine was not there.

To contest this decision, Sean Penn decided to present President Zelensky with one of his Oscar statues. He also did that to make up for his other promises that he didn’t keep. Sean Penn said that if the President was not invited, he would melt one of his Oscar statues. But in the end, he gave it to Zelensky and also let the President judge what to do with it: “Oscar is in his office, and ready to be melted whenever he wants to melt it”. But that’s not all, the actor told other interesting things during the presentation of his documentary in Berlin.
When he was asked why he offered the oscar statue to the President of Ukraine, he declared it was: “a symbolic gesture between two friends… inspired by my constant shame for the leadership of the Film Academy in choosing to present Will Smith beating Chris Rock from the greatest symbol of cinema and humanity living today, lost them.” So the director and the actor are very sorry for what happened and don’t seem to like the Academy Awards anymore. And there’s a reason for that, the actor is very involved in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Fascinating Documentary About War
Sean Penn has not only seen the conflict like us on TV, but he went to Ukraine before the conflict and also when it started in February 2022. Named ‘Superpower’, the documentary that was first released on February 17 is a tribute to the people of Ukraine and their courageous behavior them during the conflict. The film also denounces the fact that, for Sean Penn, western countries have not sent enough weapons to Ukraine to defend themselves against Russian aggression, and he hopes that this documentary will make them respond.

Screened at the Berlin Film Festival, Sean Penn spoke a lot before and after the event, to express once again how much he supports Ukraine in this conflict, after what he saw last year with his own eyes about the Russian invasion. He expressed himself on the subject of equality: “This is not an unbiased film because this is not an unequivocal war.” He then added: “The word propaganda can be used as an insult. As part of showing the truth of the absolute unity of Ukraine in the pursuit of all things without which life is not worth living, then I am very happy to be considered a propagandist. We made an unapologetically biased film, because it was a true story that we found.”
But even if Sean Penn is not happy at all with the Oscar Ceremony, one thing is for sure, it will be very interesting to watch this documentary to learn more about the situation in Ukraine.
