A Seattle man accused of causing a fatal crash in which a bus plowed into a woman has more than 50 warrants issued for his arrest, according to court documents.
Adam Abelson, 31, was arrested on Nov. 4 after the red sedan he was driving collided with another vehicle on Fifth Avenue at high speed, causing his car to hit a metro bus that ran off the road and into a vacant building.
When it crashed into the building, the bus also hit Amanda Schneider, 28, who died of multiple blunt force injuries as a result, KomoNews reported.
It has since been revealed that Abelson has a long rap sheet, including convictions for hit and run, loitering, making false statements to a public servant, at least 10 counts of theft and more.
“Over the years, the defendant has issued over 50 warrants for his arrest,” the prosecutor said.

Before the fatal crash, Abelson was pending an “attempted eluding” case in July in which he allegedly ran from an officer “through a red light in downtown Seattle,” according to court documents.
At the time of the incident, he had multiple warrants calling for his arrest for DUI, receiving stolen property and escape from community custody.
Despite his criminal career, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said that the July incident was never sent to prosecutors for a criminal charge decision, adding that prosecutors cannot file a criminal case with only a first appearance document.
That means Abelson can walk free despite having an active warrant for his arrest, with an additional warrant for attempting to elude police issued in August.

Seattle-based attorney Chris Davis, who is representing two of the 14 people who were on the bus when it crashed, said his clients are demanding answers from the county about why Abelson was able to get out and about.
“Has the government failed in its responsibility to monitor these criminals,” he told local media.
He added that his client was injured in the crash after they were “thrown into the bus like rag dolls” during the impact.

Schneider’s father told King 5 that his family is saddened by the 28-year-old’s death, saying, “I will never recover from this loss. He is my only child. I will miss him very much.”
Abelson was charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. He is also alleged to have drug paraphernalia in the front seat of his car at the time of the incident.
Police are currently awaiting a state toxicology report to determine if Abelson was under the influence at the time of the incident.
Abelson was booked into the King County Jail, with his bail set at $550,000.
