In an interview this week, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman slammed the BDS movement and said that while Harvard University has always been “pink” he doesn’t “recognize it” 25 years after he attended the school following the resignation of Claudine Gay as president.
“As a Harvard alum — look, I graduated 25 years ago, and of course it was always pink,” Fetterman told Semafor this week “But now, I don’t recognize it.”
Fetterman’s comments came shortly after Harvard President Claudine Gay resigned after struggling to answer questions condemning antisemitism before Congress and accused of plagiarism nearly 50 times.
Fetterman also told Semafor that “Israel is really a beacon of the kind of values, American values and progressive ideals, that you want to see.”
“In that region, it is our strongest ally, and we have a very special kind of relationship. I don’t understand how anyone can vote against the Iron Dome, or want to harm Israeli business or the country or anything. I will never understand that. Calling them ‘colonists’— like, where are they from? It must be TikTok or some kind of obscure class talk.”

Fetterman also addressed calls for a “ceasefire” in Israel from within his own party.
“More and more of my colleagues are calling for it,” Fetterman said. “It’s very strange. Why don’t you call for Hamas to surrender? If Hamas surrenders, and gives up their weapons, all the killing and all the misery will happen.”

Fetterman has drawn criticism from fellow Democrats over some of his positions including Israel and immigration and he recently told NBC News that he is “not a progressive.”
“I just think I’m a Democrat who’s very committed to choice and other things. But with Israel, I will be on the right side. And immigration is something near and dear to my heart, and I think we need to deal with it effectively as well,” Fetterman said.
